Things always tend to go better when I have light or medium escort. I've certainly never complained about help given whether or not the helpful pilot can effectively aim at the bad guy. One of the reasons you won't find me saving weight by stripping my leg armor.

Once, I fired at a FireStarter that was sneaking up on our Dire. After a brief exchange of laser vomit, I ripped off an arm, turned around all smug, and was two shot by the Dire, who then went on a rant about people firing at the start of the match. It was someone else on our team who calmly pointed out that the Dire was still at 100%. In my incredulity, I hadn't noticed either.

"But, I heard the lasers"

I'd like to say that I was rational, but It was one of the few times I wasn't. I ended up hoping that NO ONE sent a report in because I was fairly certain I would have been banned also :)

This is unfortunately rampant in this game.

OP, you will run into a lot of that in this game. You did what every PUG player should be doing, forming on the Assaults. The majority appreciate it when you do.

One of the first things I do in a match is figure out where the Assault Lance is starting. I then usually rally toward them (and encourage the group to do the same). If I'm in an ECM mech I usually try to escort them to the rest of the team (and announce that I'm bringing ECM escort).

I've found the Shadowcats especially good at escorting the Whales because they fill more of a support role then a light would.

So, here's the story. I'm escorting a Dire Wolf and hanging back with him during the match. After a brawl gets started I notice he's standing at the back of the group and starts getting attacked by an ECM Spider. My Shadowcat has 2 ER Large Lasers but I decide to try to help. I run towards the Dire and start shooting the little guy a bit. I also put my ECM on Counter. The Spider runs off ... success! Then I take a Gauss slug to the torso out of nowhere. That Spider must have brought a friend. I switch ECM back on Disrupt and circle a bit standing close to the Dire Wolf. Another Gauss slug to the leg. And that's when I notice the 'friendly' Dire Wolf is facing me; shooting me! The conversation goes something like this:

ME: "Stop shooting me"
HIM: "You were shooting me. You almost cored my rear armor"
ME: "That wasn't me. It was a Spider on your butt. I came to help."
HIM: "I saw you shoot me."
ME: "I have ER Large Lasers. I may have grazed you while firing at the Spider."

So. He never saw the Spider. He noticed his armor was getting shredded, looked up and saw a friendly shooting in his direction. After repeatedly explaining to him what happened he continued yelling at me and never thanked me for helping him or apologized for stripping half my armor off and one torso.

To pilots who generally bring Assault mechs - do you appreciate support?

I'm in a dire wolf a majority of the time in group que. Any acknowledgement we get is nice.

This guy you ran into is one of those who doesn't have the skill to be in a dire wolf but takes one anyway.

I play DWFs a lot in the PUG queue. I always set throttle to max as soon as Betty says I can and make a beeline for threst of the team. Maybe 25% of the time I get another lance moving to support me and provide ECM. When I do we almost invariably win. If I don't it is a crap shoot. I can destroy almost anyone 1v1 except for good light pilots that are patient enough to attack me in the open where I can't put my back to anything but even a DWF has little chance against any two mechs piloted by competent players, so having support is crucial for such a slow mechs.

I never shoot back at teammates unless they are obviously trying to kill me, accidents happen, everyone has some FF occasionally.

DW pilots sure seem a lot like your typical MMO tanks. They have an inexplicable attitude of a spoiled 11-year-old and an utter lack of appreciation of team effort. I have seen DWs turn around to alpha a teammate for obviously accidental shot to the back. There was a DW who turned and fired a volley of LRMs right into my face, while I was waiting for an assault lance to give them some ECM, and then claimed I was standing in his line of fire. I have seen DWs break a firing line to chase a light running around and then spray all their team with ML and LPL fire.

Seriously, the chassis is like a magnet for people with a bad attitude.

Well, the Atlas was too at one point. It's the biggest, meanest-looking mech in the game. People want to feel like a bad-ass, so many flock to what they perceive as the biggest bad-ass in the game. Unfortunately, assaults are one of the hardest classes to use in MWO, and nobody likes to admit fault, so...

Here's another juicy escort story. I was in the back with a Dire Wolf (in my Shadowcat again). 3 lights were on him and I was helping chase them off. He unfortunately was killed and somehow I managed to survive. Moments later as I was trying to reunite with my team, a dead teammate is spectating me and says "no wonder we aren't winning with this useless shadowcat not even in the fight".

I find it awesome that the assault:

-didn't notice the enemy ECM warning
-didn't notice the backstab warning
-didn't notice the enemy ECM warning disappear when you got in range
-didn't notice then shots you were firing in his direction weren't hitting him, yet he was still getting damaged

If you can't notice all of the above, please don't play assaults. Just please don't. Play lights so that you learn how they work, and your team won't care when you derp yourself into the enemy team.

Oh, I have a bad attitude do I?! Just for that, next game I play I'm going to TK the whole team, that'll show you who has a bad attitude! :P Jk, obviously, (I hope).

I actually haven't been piloting my DWF much lately, but I've never attacked a teammate for shooting me in the back on accident. It happens sometimes. I don't feel like I have a bad attitude but who knows. Maybe I come across that way to some people?

It's amazing how stupid some pilots can be. I'd sugarcoat it but in some cases you just can't.

I love it when i get to opportunity to get in back of a target who is already engaged and taking hits to the front.
If you time your shots with the shots to the front (especially with LRMs raining down on them), they often don't even notice that you are coring their back armor until its too late.

The OP's experience reminds me of a guy I was playing with on HPG a month or two ago. I was in my DWF and test-fired my PPC's at the start of the match (yeah, I'm one of THOSE guys  ). As we were advancing on the tower he called me a **** and demanded to know if I'd shot him. Apparently he'd been grazed by friendly fire, and led with an insult before asking if it was me. Other than I'd have known if I had hit a friendly immediately, he still had rear armour and wasn't cherry red internally so I felt confident in informing him (politely) to the negative. Sounds like Tastian's DWF pilot was of the same type.

For what it's worth, I appreciate any and all support when I'm lumbering along in an Assault, and I like to return it where possible. It gets bad sometimes when I've got ECM running - I start fretting and running about trying to keep all nearby friendlies under its jamming

It's funny that in video games, people will walk right in front of you when you are firing, get mad and start shooting you for their mistake... Happens so often that I despise folks in the pug queue as a rule. Trigger discipline is non-existant...

In real life, if they did that they would be dead, period.

Crimson straight, I'd died, but my team had cleaned up the enemy except for one spider, down to one leg. As the 4-5 remaining mechs pile onto the base, I notice in the corner of the screen of the mech I'm spectating that one legged spider jump up and shoot an atlas in the back. Everyone's looking around, when the spider does it again, and no one else notices it jumping up from behind this building. It was chaos, the atlas decided it must have been a teammate and started blasting indiscriminately, and I'm laughing too hard to let anyone know what's going on. Someone finally noticed the spider on the third jump, walked around the building and killed it, ending the team slug fest.

I've often had that experience though, of seeing an enemy mech while spectating, or hearing jumpjets while no friendlies are around, and the person playing just ignores it. I'm never quite sure if they really didn't notice, or think they have something more important to do.

No consequences for lack of fire control in this game. You're 100% correct though. In real life, you are *always* responsible for your own fire control, regardless of the intentions.

Awareness in this game is a super power or something reserved to "tryhards".

I've seen "tryhards" who don't have it. So they join a Unit so the Unit can carry them.
