Step 1: Stop putting chokepointed maps with gates, and start making natural maps with randomized (attacker) spawn locations. (Can have them be set spawns, but more than 3 of them, and chosen in a random pattern.) Make the bases more realistic (give them some walls with a lot of turrets with different strengths, designed to be defended) and not at the end of the "Canyon of the crescent moon."
It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot closer than where we are now.
Lights: Scout.
Mediums and heavies: QRF
Assaults: Brick Walls or Battering rams.
(If you want to boost it even further: add to your info tech, armor and structure buffs to assault mechs, so they are significantly more durable than the heavies that outrun them so badly.)
