I cant remember the last time i ran out of premium time tbh. It seems like with buying the packs to support the game, as well as playing the game when stuff is being handed out, premium time pretty much takes care of itself...

Last night I (legendary/overlord) tried to dual a (legendary/overlord) in a private match. I have premium time, he does not. And thus, we were not able to dual. All of this energy and excitement (we were determined to put an argument about hunchbacks and centurions to rest once and for all) turned into money grab frustration with PGI.
both players need to be members to spin up an instance that only they can benefit from, ye gods. What do they think they are? A company???

Premium time still counts down when you are logged off thus most of my friends will never purchase as they are only able to play the game a few times each month. Although ALL of us would gladly purchase if it applies only to hours spent in game.
buy the daily packs? It's less than $1.50 for 24 hours. Or do you think hourly "buy now, play whenever" rates would be cheaper than how much game you're going to get for that in a day?

Having recently come into a bit of extra cash I was seriously considering a R1 and R2 purchase despite the bad taste phoenix left in my mouth. This cash grab, pay to play, model has convinced me otherwise. Why support a company that simply does not care about its paying customers?
Lulwut?
You can play for free, you just get the basic game version when (drumroll) you aren't paying for the product.

Private matches use server resources beyond what's already being used to run public and CW matches. If you joined the regular queue, it uses the same server resources that were already going to be used to run that match. When you make a private server, extra server resources are used up to run your private match that wouldn't have been used otherwise.

PGI is paying server hosts to run those servers, so your private match is costing them money. Since PGI has to pay more when you have a private match, it's only fair that they require a couple of the players to have bought premium time to cover the cost.

Wasn't an issue for most other F2P titles. Free private game is kind of an industry standard

It is. I guess PGI is special judging by how people think this is acceptable.
Well I don't see way of making 1v1 free private games in a number of industry standard leading games which are also team based, you will have to play with a team (As far as I checked; lol, wot) which MWO model also gives, 12v12 private matches are there.
If you wan't a custom game, it requires premium. I really don't see how this is a problem, except "want.everything.for.free.now"
And just to be clear, I DON'T agree with PGI pricing model, MC purchasable item prices are atrocious. But in this instance I can see it making sense with reserving a game instance for less players than it would normally be used.
