I like this idea, since it seems most fair. I would make it so you don't need to lock on, only target, but if you lock on, it raises your arms faster..

Having arm raise/lower tied to target lock would require a LOT of fiddly calculations that change from moment to moment, and which would be an absolute nightmare on a high-latency connection.

Tying it to 'lock arms to torso' circumvents all of this by making it a simple binary switch that happens whenever the client tells the game to make it happen.

Most mech depictions show humanoid mechs in various "humanoid" poses with arms not solidly locked at torso level, So I see no problem with this Lore-wise.

The only problem might be a technical one, since there are a lot of mechs that should get this feature, and they should all get it at the same time to keep balance, so PGI would put this on the far backburner..

I only wonder should Chicken Walkers also get this, since I don't exactly see them as being able to do that..

The delineation is simple - mechs that have lower arm actuators get this; mechs that don't have lower arm actuators don't.

I fully support this!
(and already made a thread for raising arms by myself ^^)

It's a great idea but why don't you allow like the Atlas or anything with shoulder elbow style mechs to raise and extended their arm like punching but that will alow the mech to raise it's arms above cover an how you modify the lift is with the plus and minus keys on the num pad

Press "R" to target the enemey and as long as your reticle is on target ( or close to it ), your mech tries to adjust the elevation of the arms to avoid hitting obstacles between your mech and the target. This can be slow or fast depending on the chassis weight.

How does that sound ?

I LOVE this idea. Do this!

Automatic arm behaviour on R would require some more coding, I assume, but sounds intriguing, indeed!

One problem such games always have is the choice of data communicated over the server.
Atm each Mech has something like a position on the map and the yaw angle between legs and torso to allow the computers of the 23 other people to reproduce it's collision model and to hit it in a distinct part if they wish to..
Now, arm elevation is not done with arm elevation, but you have to communicate the current arm position to the 23 people in the same time using the same amount of data.
