I'm a early backer who never got around to the game, so the Atlas was my starter to use. I actually hate it, can never make any kills with it and it seems far to weak compared to every other mech around. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with it, I don't know.

Is there any specific go to mechs and setups I should be aware of? Or is putting random weapons on board the way to go?

Also is there any groups to play with, I think if I had some mentors to guide me through this it would be alot easier...

I could perhaps be of some help for mentoring if you can figure out a time you will get on (after today; sorry but I'm waiting for a new hard drive and will be spending most of the day reinstalling windows -- yay! ...that's a sarcastic yay, btw.)

That said, I have some favoritism of weapons such as twin LBX, twin AC/5, LBX + AC/5. These are usually complimented with LRMs, SRMs, or Streaks. I personally use streaks with my armlock off as an anti-light detterant. I often compliment these with twin medium lasers. However, without autocannons I would venture into Large Lasers accompanied with Streaks/LRMs and machine guns. You'd be quite surprised.

If this helps, perhaps I could offer a few videos which may help you?

This video is recorded externally by another player in a Commando. The Commando is giving me ECM and some support while filming me. The Atlas shown here is a joke build with LRM-10, SRM-6, AC/2, AC/5, 1 ton of ammunition each, and comes in at 95 tons. It kills 6 out of 8 enemies and survives a tremendous amount of attacks. The armor is well balanced between front and rear (this no longer works).

Though played in the same TS channel as another group (who were playing conquest compared to our assault), the only voice talking about the match is my own (the one that laughs about the flamer-user in chat).

Beyond that one... these are in-seat vids.
Liao Atlas: A twin Atlas Lance consistently mows through the entire enemy force, systematically killing enemies one by one.
Kon Plays Seriously: Not using my usual antics, I play with a group of people who aren't big on fooling around, against enemies whose "Skill" based on the old system was often as high or higher than my own (this happens a lot when I play with Pole and Pwnzer; these play-to-win guys racked up amazing KDRs and "winning" skill scores). It uses Two different Atlas D builds.
Atlas RS - Post Clans: This delivers my favorite single heatsink build -- A twin Large Laser, twin ER Large Laser mech with 40+ SHS -- into the fray.

Just some ideas from someone who has been playing since 2012. Good luck, and if you get more specific on your Atlas I could give you more specific advice. Welcome (back) to MWO.

As for what type of mechs you like or the play stile that you have fun or success at, it takes time and trying out a bunch of different mechs.

I got decent at the atlas and ravens, but then tried the jagermechs. I love the firebrand and A variant. Then the Griffins came out and WOW. It was like they found me. Now the one with the ECM that just came out was one of the fastest mechs I ever mastered. As for the mechs I master the most (stalkers) I am good at running them, but I still like other mechs and play stiles.

Or a bouncy LRMey mech that can run and jump and seem to do back flips over targets. Note, I can change out LRMs for SRM's and a bigger engine for more fun.
