He wants to win when you both are on the same team, even if it means you having less fun for having to use VOIP.
You only want to have fun, even if it means losing more often because communication is hampered.

I can only assume most people equate more winning with more fun, and they in turn find your refusal to use VOIP to be just as irritating as you find using VIOP to be.
