If you're in a heavy / assault and don't treat lights with the proper caution they will nibble you to death, rear weaponry or not.

Even the boardgame has moved away from rear weapons. Higher speeds and things like improved actuators means those design elements are largely extinct.

I've actually heard of that tactic in Tabletop, it worked because rear-mounted weapons had a lower BattleValue than front-mounted ones...

That's not correct, actually. See that pair of rear-firing Streak SRM-6s on the brand new Mad Cat Mk.IV from the Technical Readout: 3145.

It wouldn't, and that's why there's no rear weapons.

think that through, what if you are at 95% heat and brawling against an Assault Mech when your "rear gunner" decided to fire on a light harassing you, are you sure you like the idea of AI controlled rear mounted weapons?

Just backpedal, and circle the opposite direction that the enemy is moving around you. Also try to keep some friendly mechs near you to help out. It's really not that hard.

Maybe it needs an on and off switch?

Exactly. No different than having AMS A.I. target incoming missiles automatically.

Personally I'm a fan of the idea though.
