This tidbit is getting buried by the big news with the Reseen mechs, but it should also be noted that one of the other news items was the inclusion of Occulus Rift support for its Virtual Reality head mounted display.

From what Russ said, the Headset is working in the office.

I wonder if you aim your mechs arms with your face?

Well, I think its big news.

VR is kicking off in 2016 in a big way.

Oculus and Vive for the PC.
Morpheus for the PS4.

And supposedly, the Nintendo NX's new gimmik is a VR headset as well.
(wii-mote and touchpad controller having been tried)

Track IR already works with MWO for head tracking. No you do not aim where you look, you look where you look and you still aim with your mouse.

Track IR is highly recommended for serious MWO players. You can look one way and shoot another at the same time, something you can not do otherwise. Also you can take advantage of wider viewing angle cockpits. It is like having many monitors in one. And no your head never has to track off the screen to fully look back. It is smooth and a lot cheaper.

Once you go Track IR you can't play without it, otherwise you feel like a horse with side blinders on.

Also Track IR is not related to Facebook, unlike that thing.

I'm hoping your head movement will be translated into actual head movement within the cockpit, and perhaps lock the arms to the player's head.

I've heard TrackIR doesn't work well though? From what I've seen it moves the torso to where you look... but would love it if it was otherwise. Are there any videos out there showing it?

Pointing my head in a different direction while still requiring my eyes to stare at the monitor just does not feel right. Nope, an HMD like the Oculus Rift is still much better.

And here I just spent $900AUD on a triple monitor setup. Too bad Surround / Eyefinity is buggy as heck for MWO

Try it before you knock it. It is very natural when you use it and you can adjust it to any settings you want. I keep mine default. Looking around quickly in an assault mech without having to move your torso is another. There are a lot of benefits to it and if you are a serious player you should consider it.

TrackIR works flawlessly in MWO now, they patched it and 3D Vision 2 so you can combine the two. You only move your head slightly to move the head in the game further so you never have to turn your neck far enough for it to be off your screen.

People scared and prejudging something they haven't even tried. It is like a Naga mouse for MMORPGS, if you are serious and want an edge you use one. You just need to learn to!

I could make a video of it I guess. If people really wanted to see. You look seperate of your arms and IT WORKS. Do you all want a video?

Another example is torso twisting and protection with Track IR. You can look through your side/top cockpit windows while you move forward so as to protect your opposite torso side, and you see where you are going unlike without it. You can look around without moving your mech, etc.

Zoom also follows where ever you are looking, so your arms can be pointed at a target while you look in another direction with zoom or advanced zoom.

Track IR is expensive, though. You can get as good head tracking that works in MWO much cheaper. If you are handy with the soldering iron, very much cheaper. Also, If I had Oculus Rift, I could probably get it to work (without the 3D, though) by using Opentrack, which I already use for my head tracking.

What he said.

I Wonder what resources were diverted to this high priority project. I assume it was high priority so RB and the brass could sit in their offices going "Wow...that's cool".

Did anyone ever consider that Facebook funded the effort?

That is amazing news. Ever since the oculus was ANNOUNCED I dreamt about piloting a mech with it <3

As long as the pilot head (aka Free Look Mode in MWO) is being used for the head tracking THIS WILL BE AWESOME!

Im not saying it won't be popular. What I'm saying is that at this juncture, it's a waste of time and resources when there are so many other more pressing issues to be dealt with.

Adding Oculus Rift support is low hanging fruit since the basic mechanics of having a detailed cockpit, 3D support and mouse look is already implemented. Most of the work would be in creating menus that are Oculus friendly. I would guess only a single resource and less than a week to implement it.
