They make a difference.

Thought I'd throw that out there.

The other game I play is iRacing and whenever they start talking about frame rates a war ensues.

My brother's a fan of that game. As it happens, he affectionately refers to it as iRaging.

But no need for a war here, I think everyone agrees the frame rates make a difference. With the new, revamped maps mine seem to be drifting from the 50s-70s to the 40s ... I fear that before long it'll be time for a new gaming rig, for me too.

Yeah mine in MWO stays above about 60 and goes up to about 150 FPS with 1080 x 2560 resolution with no tearing or other visual problems so far. In iRacing I get 200 minimum up to about 400 and it usually stays around 270 FPS most of the time. The general thinking at iRacing is 120 FPS minimum but I still notice input lag so I go higher.

I'd say MWO is probably a ton less critical on FPS though. There's no shortage of anecdotes of people racking up surprisingly respectable numbers with 20-30'ish fps.

I'd put auto racing games in the opposite end of the spectrum as being extremely dependent on FPS, and lag for that matter. Slipstreaming, overtaking and driving into corners side-by-side at 300+ km/h is just a ton more demanding in that respect than anything we face in MWO. The first game I ever played online was Grand Prix Legends (now there was a game with a brutal new-player experience!) in ca. 2000, on a 33.6 kbps dialup. Boy was it hopeless. I'm actually kind of surprised that even with modern broadband connections iRacing works as well as it does (as far as I can tell, from watching my brother play it).

In iRacing when you turn the wheel, step on the brakes or use the throttle it sets off a huge number of physics calculations it has to do before it can display the results on you monitor. A FPS (First Person Shooter) only needs to register a change in cursor position and the angle of the shot.

MWO seems to be very smooth and responsive even at 60 FPS which you just could not do at all in iRacing.

What are your system specs to get those numbers? And what are your settings at?

i7@4GHz and GTX760 will do it easily. I like to play at low settings but have to turn some settings up to keep fps down and my fans under a low roar in some places on the newer maps. Having played the game for a couple years at around a 40 fps peak, I have to say it is whole other world when fps can be kept higher than 60, especially in a brawl.

Well you could easily afford to build one from used parts if you want to, it's an old i7 950 @ 4GHz and an AMD 6970, in game I shut off all of the eye candy and use DirectX 9.

Jesus Christ guys you all are talking about averaging +60 and complaining when you hit ~40, and I'm here happy with a max of 30 and averaging somewhere just under 20 with all settings as low as possible. Around 15 is my border of "unplayable".

Actually...if someone wants to tell me how to optimize my laptop that'd be much appreciated.

I found sub-20 was unplayable, 20 - 30 was acceptable and anything above 30 is solid performance. Anything above 60 is wasted on the human eye.

I actually have v-synch on (caps FPS at 60) b/c leaving it off was frequently overheating my graphics card.

If you're sub-20 on a regular basis, it's time to scrape the change out of the couch and upgrade the hardware. FPS is real.

You guys are playing a very different game from me. I'm stuck in the <20 frames region, even on lowest settings. Sometimes I get small spikes of up to 22 frames. My machine the best evidence that PGI is actually trying to optimize the game. When I first started, I was getting an average of 14 Fps. Now it's 19-22

I have a friend in game who struggled to perform well for a significant period of time. After many, many drops with me giving advice about loadouts, positioning, playstyle, weapon groupings, etc., I finally asked him what his framerate was. When he told me, "somewhere between 10 and 18, usually", I asked him if he could afford a hardware upgrade. Two weeks later with his new rig in place, his damage scores more than doubled and it became clear he always had the ability, but his hardware was holding him back.

I know everyone can't afford top-notch hardware, but if you're sub-20 FPS I bet an upgrade would help your game immensely. Sell plasma if you need to.

Ok, that might be a little extreme.

/Maybe not

That cracked me up.

I'm actually biding my time. saving up and Building a nice laptop on Xotic PC for about 1000 dollars that would give me top notch performance for a few years to come. Frames make a huge difference. When I got that frame jump from their first optimization run, my damage numbers almost tripled over night. Which is especially astounding, considering I was running in a commando at the time. Fast mechs, and low frames don't mix that well.

I was hesitant to ask the framerate question because if the answer had been over 30 the last thing I could have said was, "You know, you don't really have to have MS to join -MS-. That's just something we say in chat for the lulz..."

I actually have a laptop more powerful than my desktop I used to play on.
I'm not at my laptop now, but the specs I remember are this.
Processor: i7 quad core (8 threads), 2.3GHz
RAM: 16 GB
Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro M3000
Hard drive: 1 TB 7200rpm

I do realize the Quadro is geared towards CAD and professional applications as opposed to gaming.

Is there anything else you need?

The only reason I asked about specs was for those who are struggling. I get 120-150 fps at 1900X1200 on a monitor that can handle it at 144khz. When I built my system 2 years ago my wife asked if I really needed to spend that much. My response was, "well, actually, yes."

It should be able to.

Which desktop graphics gaming card is comparable to yours and how much video memory you got?
