I get cbills for repairs ammo and guns. But what's xp for, is it for piloting skills or something like that.

Yep, basically. You'll get xp for both your mech and your pilot to unlock abilities and mods.

there seems to be two skills trees, one for the pilot and one for the mech.

Yea, C-bills are for repairs.
XP is leveling Factions and your pilot's mech skills (I think).
