In the Townhall, Russ mentioned that he'd like to see CW set earlier than 3050 at some point, but he dismissed the idea because it would rule out the Clans. This made me wonder about the lore, specifically at what point the Clans were at war with each other before the Invasion. Did they fight each other continuously from their foundation up until the invasion of the Inner Sphere, or were there specific period where the Clans were at war with each other?

It seems like it would be possible to have CW set in an earlier period, except you'd limit Clans to fight each other, while the Inner Sphere Houses fought amongst themselves. Assuming, of course, that there is a period where all the current Houses exist (Davion, Steiner, Liao, Marik, Kurita and FRR) while all the current Clans exist, and are at war.

Thoughts? I know a lot of IS players would be happy to play matches without Clan tech.

Russ also mentioned that he'd like to keep the CW year as 3052 for a good while after phase 3 is implemented, just to finally experience the Clan Invasion the way they had envisioned it. Which is good. It seems he's in no hurry to move to 3065. The only problem with going back in time instead of moving forward is that there's probably less money in it. And many of the current mechs and weapons would disappear as you move further and further back.

Wasn't there a big fight for who was going to invade around the same time that Davion was kicking Liao butt?

Not really enough Clan planets for them to fight over. Plus, if a pure IS vs IS option was available then there would only be Joseph M left to fight the Clans, and he needs to sleep sometimes.

Having a no-Clan phase of CW would be interesting, but there will be complaints unless you allow them to participate in some form (with like all IS mechs).

However, I don't expect this to ever happen... even for the curiosity (not enough Clan units have done IS vs IS to see how different things are to a degree).

Don't they have loads of worlds at the edge of the galaxy or something? Or am I thinking about the Sith?

Thats the Sith. Don't Clans just have 5 worlds (The Pentagon Worlds)?

It'd be cool to set it pre-clan invasion, say a year, with the clans squabbling among themselves to decide WHERE the IS gets invaded. While IS fights among themselves because...REASONS!

Could be a cool way to mix it up so it's not always FRR getting its ass kicked at the start. Could move the invasion to Marik, Steiner, Liao, etc, space instead. Or maybe two different fronts.

Traditionally, the way the Clans got into the IS conflicts pre-invasion was through Wolf's Dragoons. A CW set in the 4th Succession War could allow Clan factions the ability to fight in the IS conflict as the Dragoons, but be limited to IS tech.

They'd have to get rid of the FRR, though-that was Kurita space back then.

Bad idea. Why? Because then IS would have to fight IS. IS sucks in CW and barely participates. What would be the point of giving them whole CW map when they don't care about it?

They also have The Kerensky Cluster.

IS vs IS Clan vs Clan... now if only they could figure out a way to code a honour system we could get somewhere... But PGI will not do that, so...
