Using the Orion and using AMS ammo in place of missing Medium Lasers a BH with 1 Gauss + 6 ML is very possible with 300 standard engine.

ON1-K(C)

To check the heat, assuming no quirks, I recreated it with a Battlemaster 3M with the same amount of weapons/heat sinks and adjusted the engine to get the same speed. The Battlemaster seems to have less crit space though so only 2 tons of ammo were put in it for Gauss but it shows 45% heat efficiency.

BLR-3M

So with a standard 300 engine, you can have a Bounty Hunter that goes 71.3 KPH with 1 Gauss Rifle (3 tons ammo) and 6 Medium Lasers with 45% heat efficiency (via smurfy). This means you have 18 total DHS (12 in engine, 6 outside). It gives a 45 point damage alpha and probably runs quite cool, though the range has a lot to be desired over the standard 3 Large Laser + Gauss IS builds.

Now with a 300XL you can build it to hit a bit harder with 1 Gauss (3 tons ammo), 3x Large Laser and 4x Medium Laser with 5 DHS. The 5 DHS will allow good spam of 3LL + Gauss but the heat spike will be severe once you alpha with the 4 ML.

Recreating it on the Battlemaster 3M just to check the heat it shows 28% heat efficiency with all those weapons.

BLR-3M

But if you fight mostly with 3 LL and Gauss, the heat efficiency is actually 50%:

BLR-3M

And you have 4 ML as backup or close-range alpha options to deal 62 damage instead of just 43 damage (from 3xLL+Gauss).

Based on this quick check, I don't think it can compete with the Timber's 50 alpha (with Gauss+5ERML) with a standard engine since it will have way less range and only a 45 damage alpha and Timber can have the option of having more energy high mounted as well.

The XL version of this mech hits a lot harder at 62 damage at the cost of higher heat so that's something, but you're out of the game the moment your side torso pops so that depends on the hitboxes and twist speed and quirks (structure quirks for ST?).

I still think it'll be a good IS mech and I wouldn't mind playing the standard engine version though I just hope they add some twist quirks and structure quirks to make it not feel too sluggish with the low engine cap.

This isn't meant to be a full review on whether the mech will suck or own, but I just thought I'd post what I played around with on Smurfy for those that haven't bothered yet.

PS

Feel free to burn me at the stake if I got my build/maths wrong.

Minor detail you overlooked... the Bounty Hunter's marauder has a maximum engine size of 275...

*Edit* Well they changed that when I wasn't looking. Hooray
