I'm trying to break out of my assault noobyness and want to step down to a heavy. Something with a little more speed, but not something armorless.

The Timberwolf, Stormcrow, and Hellbringer are the top 3.

Anything but Maddog, Direwolf, and Mist Lynx.
Everything else is playable, not that the above aren't, but they're very difficult to level for a beginner.
But if you want to push the easy button, play Ebon-Jag, Hellbringer, Timberwolf, Stormcrow, just pick one you won't be unsatisfied.

If you can't do alright in a frickin Mad Dog, I heartily recommend spending more time in MWO's new tutorial, because you need to work on them piloting skills.
The Summoner is slightly trickier, but you can still find two or three decent builds for it. The only reason I wouldn't recommend the Summoner is due to lack of variation. There's really not a whole lot of different things you can do with it, due to lack of podspace and hardpoints.

Now now - Maddog is an excellent mech - if not quite a bit less flexible when it comes to omnipods. I've not found a clan heavy I didn't learn to like. Mediums is a different story.
Just get them all - you'll be happier that way in the long run.

I can't do well for squat in Mad Doges, but I'm actually not bad in my Summoners. Do I need more tutorial time too, Alistair? q_q
Anyways. I'd recommend the Cauldron-Born as a first Clan heavy for someone stepping down from assaults. The CBN is almost as versatile as the Timber Wolf, does ballistics-centered builds better, and is also (slightly) less destined to get nerfhammered into useless garbage once the Great Rebalance gets around to addressing Clan technology. Don't get me wrong, it'll likely get pounded into near-pointlessness at that point too...but near pointlessness is better than 100% pointlessness.

ebon jaguar is the best all-around clan mech for beginners IMO
it blends the perfect mix of firepower, survivability, and speed and is just the right tonnage for running three of them in CW (x3 ebon jaguars and x1 shadowcat is 240 tons).
and unlike the other clan mechs like timberwolf, hellbringer, etc... you arnt forced into boring laser vomit.... you have the extra podspace to use ballistics.
the timberwolf isnt as good for beginners IMO because you cant run three timberwolves in CW... theyre too heavy. The ebon jaguar gives you more of a complete package to run CW immediately; and three ebon jaguars and a shadowcat is a pretty decent drop deck.
