I got my license because my parents got there own. The hobby is dieing because it doesn't stay with the times. For example, 2 meter radios are bulky when they could be about the size of a cell phone.

Anyways, this is KE7___ monitoring.

Hobby? Well yes to an extent. I have my license as much for the potential of EM Comm as for personal use. I live in tornado alley, and we have a good core group of hams in the area who are members of AREA/RACES.

When we have to go active, this here internet thing is likely to be inaccessible. Whereas with my radio equipment all i need is a DC power source, and a piece of wire for an antenna and i have full communication. Even digital comms and data transfer.

You realize as a ham you can use your cell phone to run Echo Link, and talk around the world? As for HT, some of that weight is the battery, and a durable case. Heck some of them are nearly as small as my pantech marauder droid phone, when you ignore the antenna.

Nikol!
my father is actually getting into Ham (again) and kinda dragging me into it..
i'm over here in South Carolina so we can probably hear you on it on his mobile fairly easy..
I have a "GSM" license that he had gotten for the "family" but I don't have a personal radio for use yet..
he got his General license when he took his "test"
i'ma try to get my Tech license whenever I can..
i'll probably get a radio for my car and a handheld aswell..

would be a nice way to call up other Sea Wolves if we needed to lol

Nice Bloodshed.

The Tech isn't very hard. General isn't bad either. I am currently studying for my Extra, and it is a notch well above as far as difficulty. As far as your fathers mobile radio, he is using a HF rig? If just uhf/vhf i could possibly find a local Echolink node and talk through that. In fact my first contact the day i installed my first mobile radio was just that way. My cousin in Fresno, CA connected to a local node and for all intensive purposes i was talking to Cali via my mobile.

That radio is probably worth a nice bit of money to the right person, depending on the bands and the condition.

My dad has a technician license for Ham. IDK much about radios except for setting them up and Lat/Lon for setting up shortwave scanner antennaes.

worth good money but for sentimental reasons it stays where it is, the whole sets still there, including the handset the army customized for him (apparently every engineer that was responsible for radios had their own handset that was personalized and adjusted to just the right tension for when they were sending out mass telegraph messages) its well taken care of and can be put to use at any time with just a few minutes of setup but man that craps heavy cant imagine how they carried all that on their backs
as for bands... only info i could find on it was it operated over 500kc up to 4.0mc and then 4.0mc to 27.0mc depending on which reciever you were operating crv-46147 and 46148 im still working on identifying the rest of the equipment as theres not much for identifying markings on them im most interested in the handset for telegraph usage cant figure out who built it
