Thought of this when pretty much every 'mech out there was pure meta in the last challenge. There are always some 'mechs that are really not very good but people try to make them work anyway. Sometimes they succeed, more often they fail.
So, I think it would be fun to have a challenge where you had to use some variant of what is considered a "bad" build. An example would be an Atlas with at least an LRM 20 (or combination) and 6 tons of ammo.
It could be fun to give us a little break from pure meta matches.

I suspect the displayed tiers is going to lead to people playing harder in general and that'll correlate to more meta builds in general. I support your initiative here but I think it's going to get worse

People would react to this type of event in one of two ways:
A. Still try to skirt the "bad mech" building condition as much as possible to make the "least bad" build possible. Mechs with quirks, for example, might make a bad build into something less bad than usual.
B. Ignore it, use traditional meta-mechs and farm the people trying to fulfill the event requirements.

Well there was that guy that did the old tech challenge.
An event for stock mechs / mechs without any advanced tech could be interesting but likely very frustrating.

What might be more interesting is if PGI picked the lowest 2-4 chassis (maybe even variants excluding heros) of each weight class and used them as the mechs to play.
Could just make something like that a weekly challenge, least used mech in the game gets a little bonus reward for the weekend.

Yeah....like catapult challenges, Awesome challenges....Atlas challenges...Quick draw challanges....that would be interesting..
Then they could offer mech packs and hero/champion mech sales (or rewards mabe?) for each event...cause not everyone owns an awesome you know...And they could possibly make some money off of it.
Cbill discounts during the events for the regular variants...I'd be game.
Getting spammed by people who are actually good shots with ERPPC quirked awesomes is not fun sir...
