Having Elites/Mastery makes it much easier to make money. I'd say if you're certain you want a hero, grab a Grid Iron. It'll have the added benefit of letting you skill up the 2 HBKs you have. Though if you think you might just grab a 3rd HBK (say a 4P), maybe get a mastery pack of a different mech, something of a new weight class perhaps.

Another alternative right now would be to purchase the smallest MC pack ($7 US) and that will get you the 2015 loyalty mech for MC purchases (a Cicada that will have a 30% cbill bonus) on 10/6.
Finally, there are Hero mech sales a few times a year that can save you up to 50% on hero mechs. I think there should be one close to Halloween (was last year).
PS - here's a well written article on cbill/mc/$$ earning/spending in MWO

- Use multiple mechs, as soon as you die in a match, exit and hop into your next mech.
- Don't use consumables in matches as they almost never make back the money they cost
- Play CW with a group of 12 (use your faction TS or major Unit's in that faction's ts.
- Cw will net you currently around 185k for a victory, Plus the actual match rewards. on a good match, you should be getting 500k cbills.
- That cw total is around 680k per match, To reduce wait times you have to have a 12-premade
- Hero mechs: the Huggin is an srm monster. Oxide is not bad either for farming

Also - if you haven't done the new player academy yet, finishing it will get you a few million cbills easy.

My advice would be to stay away from CW at this point - to win, you need fully mastered and upgraded mechs, and/or highly skilled, coordinated teams. Don't feel bad about getting smashed by MS, even "good" IS teams have a challenge fighting clan mechs.
Also - upgrading your mechs is going to improve your damage (and earning) potential. Double HS are almost mandatory on mechs, and I tend to choose endo over ferro to "free up" additional tonnage. Gives you more shots before shutting down or lets you bring harder hitting or more weapons (pulse vs "regular" lasers)

BUY THE HUNCHBACK MASTERY PACK. Grid Iron is a solid medium mech, and having a third HBK will benefit. The Grid Iron, being a HERO mech, will bring the C-Bill bonus and XP bonus. And there's a Champion mech in there, too, for even MORE C-Bill farming.
Premium Time is a solid investment if you're looking to maximize your C-Bill and XP earnings. It helps, especially on top of a HERO mech's bonuses.
And then there are contests/challenges. Like the one going on right now. That's 50,000 C-Bills per qualifying match, up to 20 qualifying matches per weight class, just in the 12v12 queues. I'm looking forward to that extra paycheck myself, to help buy my next module.

also op, if you want to spend money, note that buying any mech from the is or clans invasion/resistance packs a la carte gives you a 30% c-bill version of it, for clan mechs it's prime, for is mechs it depends, they are marked with (i) or ®
so, if you want to have a 30% c-bills timber wolf or stormcrow it will cost you 55$ for 3 chassis one of which will have that bonus, for is resistance mechs like, for instance, grasshopper it will cost you 35$ for the same 3 chassis one of which will be ® one
if you want a light with that buff, buying the lowest tier package is cheaper than a la carte

Get the Hunchback Mastery Pack, use the Grid Iron + Premium time. Sell off any redundant Hunchbacks. Should get you lots of Cbills.
