If you want analog movement use a splitfish. But use a mouse for aiming. You can do fine with it after you get used to it. I would suggest a good gaming mouse the splitfish mouse is junk. And of course keyboard works fine if you like to use them :)

The ONLY reason I'm in tier 4 is because of my high ping. I average 600-2000 MS just cuz I use satellite. If i had your internet I would be in tier 1 no dought. Its very difficult to hit targets even if I'm using a mouse when your shots lag 1-3 secs behind, specially trying to hit moving light mechs. Its impossible. Sometimes projectiles dont even register even if ur aiming right at the target. Thats why I have to play at night when the bandwidth is better and my ping averages 600.

In which case, I think your anti-joystick bias is a result of your internet condition. ;)

I find it amusing how everyone with insufficient performance (in your case hardware-dependent I assume. And I do assume because joysticks are the rofl in MWO) hides behind "I play for fun".
Just like some other guy yesterday: talking $hit in chat, flaming, delivering 34 match score (yay!) and then flaming that he would "just play for fun" as opposed to us other idiot who don't have a live, blabla, need score to get hard, blabla.

The error and impudence in that statement is: you are not alone in the world. Other people play for fun, too, you know? And by ruining their game (everybody has to lift their weight, you know) you behave directly unsocial. Even in a game. Even for fun.

So in my book, the very lazy excuse "I'm playing just for fun [and f*** you others]" is actually rude behavior.

It's like when all my married friends with kids tell me that I should start my own family and I tell them "No thanks...I have sex for fun."

Why should I live my life based on somebody else's value system? Same applies to this game.

The steering wheel would at least be apppropriate on Caustic Valley.

Ok, I've seen good and bad players and we all have I'm sure. However I've had only 1 person I've ever seen that used a Joystick play it well enough to earn my respect. That doesn't mean I respect all Joystick users. Some players are just not meant to use a Joystick. If its that noticeable even from someone previewing you when they die, you are usually pretty awefull. If you are good enough that it keeps up with a mouse user, then by all means keep doing what you do.

I understand practice makes perfect and we all started out somwhere, but if you are in a CW drop using a Joystick, I dont want you on my team, EVER! So it comes down to this question. Do you prefer teammates using a mouse or joystick?

Mechwarrior used to be played with joysticks. Even the official Battletech Tesla Pods used joysticks. Mechwarrior 4 had great joystick support! It is a shame that they are no longer competitive--but, alas, they aren't useful in Mechwarrior Living Legends, also.

Piranha never promised to make MWO controller agnostic--so if you use a joystick in this game--you are hurting your team.

However... there are other games that HAVE promised to be controller agnostic--Star Citizen, which was kickstarted by Chris Roberts--did promise that.

And they have lied to everyone about it--keep that in mind if anyone here is thinking of getting Star Citizen. They broke a lot of kickstarter promises over there. Space games and joysticks go together. Elite does it well. You can't tell who controller players are using. Star Citizen should do the same but it does not.

Anyways, I digress. Joysticks and first person shooters do not mix.

You make one big mistake:

Your friends don't rely upon you or children of your own to raise their children.
Your team mates in a game (or work or whatever) DO rely upon you.

Delivering performance (or at least trying one's best to do so) in team efforts is not a life choice, it's a duty.
If you want "life choices" and total freedom and blah, play single player.

As I said: you people are unsocial and obviously not intelligent enough to understand it.

Actually your mistake is once again missing the point.
What he is talking about is actually the reason why the tier system exists. If we don't care about being competitive, we're placed accordingly. Some people in our tier do care, but they'll make their way out eventually. If they deserve to be else where, that's the whole point of PSR.

I think its you who needs to adapt your social behavior and intelligence.

Well, let me start off by saying that I am a strong believer in that it's your game that you paid money for, so you can play it however you damn want to: Mouse, keyboard, joystick, or gamepad. Use your toes instead of your hands for all I care. I also play several other games that have gamepad support that people sometimes use, and I believe if they are taking the time and putting up some money to play the game, that's their decision I have no business in dictating.

On the other hand, if you're playing with a joystick, I do sincerely hope you end up on the other team whenever I PUG drop.

it's F2P man....any money spent was purely elective....and unless you are that rare .001% that does't suck like a dyson with a Joystick, I elect to not have to play with them. Honestly, Joystick support is so bad on this game I wish they would disable it and save us all from the short bus.

It is quite literally impossible to be as effective with a joystick as it is with a mouse in any kind of FPS. Use one if you want, but you are severely handicapping yourself, and lose any right to complain when you lose.

I don't deny this is true now, but I am curious when it transitioned. I used to wreck competitively pre Mektek MW4 play using my stick. Wouldn't dream of trying it on MWO. Tried setting up my stick in Open Beta a few times....so much slop!

Joystick... ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

Edit:
In all seriousness though - how I play, I couldn't care less what people use. I play for fun. But when it comes to CW, I can see how using a joystick can have it's downfalls and affect the team. Doesn't mean that the player is incompetent, just that accuracy and reactions are known to suffer from using joysticks.
If the person is comfortable enough using joysticks in a competitive environment, then more power to them, but I think it's fair to expect them to perform on the same level as everyone else.

Mouse, always - and I say that as someone who's been forced to joystick a lot lately (carpal issues) - I can't hold a mouse so I use a joystick. If I group up, I disclose it just so people can ask me to leave - I even offer! What I did do, that made a huge difference, is shifting to all lasers. I couldn't hit anything with ballistics when saddled with the joystick so shifting to all lasers allowed a reasonably high level of performance while still allowing my wrist to "rest". I don't think people using a joystick is that big of a deal as long as they're good at it. If you're terrible with a joystick, just go to a mouse. Shift your loadouts to energy based. There are ways to go from terrible to bad, maybe even mediocre.

That being said - joystick is a different kind of fun, simply because it *is* hard. When the Rift comes out I'm buying one, and joysticking until I barf all over my desk. I know it'll be bad. I know I won't do well. And I know I'll have a great time failing. At the end of the day, I play for fun - I've dropped using a logitech steering wheel on occasion for the lulz. ;)

No not yet, I was going to donate the $10,000 but someone grabbed it I think. I will wait till the next 1. I just got done reading all the stuff you get with the package deals but when I saw there will be higher tiers available later on Im going to wait and see what else comes out. I'm willing to pay them $500,000. I would nvr pay PGI that kinda doe tho, after all the **** theyve done, and all the useless Devs they hired. Nvr again PGI, you guys screwed this game up so bad, and you still cant even making a damn chat box to meat a 2015 standard.

They opened up a second pair of 10K slots. So the Legendary Commander stuff is still available.

Mouse for aiming (always!)
saitek x35 throttle (has rudder on fingertips) modified with LeoBodnar board and extra buttons - for throttle and turning legs (and buttons for just about everything else)

Love it, feels great to increase speed with big throttle and turn using rudder.

thats a great board. i bough the 14 bit version and used it in various joystick hacks over the years.

of course then i wrote my own usb hid discriptor and now can pump my rig with up to eight 16 bit axes. loaded it onto my arduino leo and hooked up a ads1115 16-bit delta-sigma analog to digital converter (in 15 bit mode, you get 4 inputs instead of 2 that way) break out board. in the near future i may have a 3d printer and can print out a few gimbal designs i have clunking around in my head.

will any of that make my joystick game any better, probibly not.

You learn to prioritize. I have a 5 buttons + mousewheel on my mouse and 4 buttons + the hat switch that counts as 4 more on my joystick handle. What I consider hight priority goes to those and the rest are on keyboard. I also have a cheap chinese foot switch that I don't really use so much. Might start using it when I get buy a 'mech that has MASC. If a physical attack key gets implemented, I'll have to rethink my scheme. The voice comm key will probably have to go. I don't use that so much anyways. Voice activated teamspeak works better.

This I can completely Agree with. Maybe I should have made my OP more specific. I agree, that joystick can be used for movement, however, I have seen ALOT of players using joysticks for aiming which is what I was getting at. The movement speed for aiming is horrible, and accuracy horrible. I was in a match last night, which is why I created this post with every player using Joystick aiming. I was the first to die cuz I lag spiked and rubber banded into a log in the swamp map and got pounded. I watched previews of every player on the team, and chastized them for using Joystick aiming. We all lost ofc but it was painfull to watch, sloppy aiming. It was the worst match I think I ever witnessed ever in public q q_ue.

MWO is why I retired my joystick and throttle, which is a shame because it was a $250 F-16 HOTAS. MW4 had better joystick support than mouse support.

If my joystick wasn't a replica F-16 joystick, I'd use it to control the lower portion of my mech instead of the keyboard.

funny thing....my old 50$ Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro was fine for MW4, and usually as good if not better than folks with 300$ sticks. Could control literally everything you needed on it, with great precision, and no extras. Was perfect for me. Still have it. Before I upgraded my Laptop to Windows 10, was STILL using it to play MW3 and MW4.

I used to play Mechwarrior 2/3/4 with Joystick and Mouse.

Keyboard just never felt right back then, controls just felt too rigid compared to smooth acceleration and turning you could do with a joy/mouse combo.

For MWO, never really tried it, but I need to find a good Ambidextrous Joy because I always used left hand for it.

Mouse for twist and aiming (left hand),, Stick for driving (right hand. x axis steering, y axis throttle), my stick has 11 buttons/triggers on the stem alone, plus another 7 on the mouse. I'm lefthanded so it's easy.

It's all down to personal preference, Just because YOU can't use a particular control method, doesn't mean no-one else can.

To me joystick improves my piloting, which makes me better in light and medium mechs, because with the throttle I have more precise control over moving. In an assault or heavy, with lasers, then yes I like the mouse because of improved aim. But a lot of times I run missile boats anyway, so aiming is less important. I don't worry too much about what my teammates are using to control thier mechs, I do however get frustrated when they are all hiding behind the same building not shooting anything out of fear of taking damage.
