I've used many a assault mech and am currently considering buying the wolverine.
I like to tank damage and get up close and personal. I don't care too much about speed but I like to have a tough mech and I'm not sure if I should get the wolverine or just save up for a proper assault.

I have piloted and enjoyed the following mechs:Atlas,Banshee,Direwolf, and stalker.

Please tell me your thoughts below!
should I buy the wolverine?
save up for an assault?
or just recommend a mech!

Hi,

I am not a specialist in this game but what I know already about and tried it out I can recommend the Thunderbolt 5SS. Very good heavy with excellent quirks for medium pulse lasers. The common mount is 7 mpls.

The Wolverine is pretty tanky for a medium. I have a few issues with them though, mainly if you lose your right arm in the 6R or 6K you lose a lot of your firepower. You can run 1 AC5 and 3 srms in the 6R or smash two AC5's in the right arm with plenty of ammo, add a couple JJs for agility. The 6K with 3 or 4 Large Lasers in the right arm is a good fire support mech. The 7K with 3 SRM6s and 3 Medium Lasers is pretty fun as well. I prefer at least a STD 275 for the internal HS and decent speed. A STD 300 is nice as well. I don't recommend XL unless you are running 2 AC5 in the 6R, but you are more fragile to side torso loss.

The Hunchback is also a good medium mech and pretty tanky with good agility. Somewhat diverse chassis. 2 SRM6 and 5 Medium Lasers in the 4SP. 9 Medium Lasers, a std 260 or so and lots of HSs in the 4P. You can also run the standard AC20 build in the ballistic versions.

Stormcrows, while expensive, are good brawlers. They are faster than they are tanky, but have good hitboxes even though they are fairly large and can pack a punch.

I love stalkers, great hitboxes for brawling and good hardpoint locations. For brawling the 3F (has best torso twist angle) with STD 300, 4x ASRM6 and 6 Medium Pulse is a beast. A little hot but manageable, as with any mech get double HS asap. Also makes a good platform for LRMs. The 4N is good fire support with 6x Large Lasers. I run std 300s in all of my stalkers.

The Atlas is also a good brawling assault. Banshees seem to be more fire support oriented but I've never piloted them much. Dires are kings of firepower.

Edit: Also consider the King Crab, its fat but can hold some firepower.

If you like slow lumbering assault mechs... king crab? Give it just... all the dakka.

The Wolverine is my favorite mech in the game, I play them like a pocket heavy, stick with the big guys, and support the main front. My favorite engine for this mech is the Standard 220, it allows you to take damage, take the weapons/equipment you want, and 69 kph (with speed tweak) allows you to keep up with the team.
