Been playing while never got to in depth with the game. whats the point or advantage of joining a group or faction?

I'd say primarily it is a matter of "faction pride". The various Clans and Houses have some fairly cool background, and a lot of people consider it more immersive to align themselves with their chosen "nation", not to mention that it creates a sense of community. No longer are you a lone wolf, but you have comrades-in-arms fighting for a common cause.

There are also some in-game rewards you can get (usually with a bonus for joining an underdog faction), but nothing that should be of much interest if you dislike the idea of "joining a cause" in general.
