Anyone noticed a large increase in the amount of long range weapons being fielded?

I had a game this evening where a Mad Dog, a Warhammer and my Griffin were trying to hold the ramp in Canyon while pretty much the rest of the team sat back and lobbed Lurms or used erLLs.

The three of us "front liners" promptly crumbled when the enemy pushed hard.

I hop around the other cockpits as I always do and it was mostly long range kit. I even happened across a KGC sporting nothing but Lurms. I sighed.

Needless to say we got rolled.

After a similar occurance in the next game - same map - I decided to open a can of cider and call it a night.

Was I just unlucky or is it a common occurance?

People are enjoying the "polar meta".
Map is common, so builds that do well on it are chosen, and people with those builds will vote for polar.
It will pass once the novelty of Hoth dies off.

im definitely not enjoying the polar meta

the last thing this game needed was more reason to bring long range lasers

One of the reasons I like the map. It's going to influence our time in the 'mechbay. 270m Builds are a very dangerous proposition these days. A few more specialized maps (Big City has been brought up a few times today) will really force build diversity. A good thing IMO.

The novelty of the only good map in the game will not wear off.

These actually exist in disturbingly large numbers regardless of anything else in lower tiers. Seriously, people. Mount some lasers and take off a few tubes. It's bad when I walk up in -my- LRM boat and slowly beat you to death with secondary weapons. Also, see LRM Atlai or pretty much friggin' anything from a Catapult on up with enough missile hardpoints.

The problem is short range builds are atrociously bad on long range maps

While long range builds are still okay on short range maps

So theres always going to be a trend towards long range weapons...

Instead of having long-range maps and short-range maps.... all types of weapons should be viable on all maps. Thats what makes maps like Canyon so great. Because you get long-range fighting on the top level and brawls on the bottom level inside the canyons.

To be fair, it didn't take this map to cause players to trend towards long range builds. Just took this map to cause people to whine more about LRM builds.
