It's perfectly normal, only because the TTK is much longer than it is supposed to be.
If it were 16 armor points per ton as opposed to 32, we'd probably be looking at 12:10 or 12:9 matches more often.

It's Interesting, But The Match Always Ends Up With 12:3 Or 12:4?

I think games were longer back in beta.
It's a high alpha problem, mechs don't last long and the chances of a comeback gets slim.
Back in the day the biggest alpha problems were SplatCat and Dual Gauss K2.

As others have said, as soon as once team takes a loss, that's less damage absorption and firepower they have to fight back with. It often snowballs from there, and becomes increasingly more difficult for the disadvantages team to recover.
Getting a close game means both teams are evenly matched and are able to inflict symmetrical damage. Matchmaker can only do so much, the rest comes down to gameplay dynamics.
Related: Lanchester's Laws. tl;dr, the team that stays together and focuses fire better wins.

I love how people equate less armor to more even matches.
No. If armor was TT-standard, we'd be seeing 'Mechs under 55 tons going down in a single hit, meaning the first strike would tip the scales even faster than it does now in terms of snowballing the game.
