Why can't PGI do the same? Im looking at the jacket, i don't like the Atlas head, but im immediately remembered of the BattleMaster Tshirt we see in devlog and i love the BattleMaster artwork.

Might be because they're not 'techically' selling them?

Or maybe they have a license to make physical goods, i don't know.

PGi doesn't own a license to make physical products and sell them.... i dont think.

Also HBS GAVE those things away to you when you bought into the kickstarter. You bought the game and contributed at a level which gets you a certain amount of goods. But i dont think they are actually making money off the sales of the goods. So this may be a way around legal mumbo jumbo.

If they start selling t-shirts with their mechs on them id be really happy too! NGNG does it...so i dont see why PGI cant.

PGI licensed the rights to make MechWarrior game from Microsoft, since the Microsoft corporation owns the MechWarrior video game franchise.

The BattleTech kickstarter is no way affiliated with Mechwarrior.

This is starting to make more sense, lets hear it from PGI.

They're giving the merch away as "gifts" for backers, they are not selling it, that is an important distinction because it means neurotic corporate lawyers can't go after them for it.

I've been wanting to make myself a bomber jacket for some time now. Having a heck of a time finding a suitable jacket or coat though.... I don't want Walmart, but I don't want to break the bank either. Been looking at Duluth Trading's products as an option. Anyone else have any suggestions?

This is exactly the reason. Straight from the horse's mouth:

Quote

We’ve gotten a lot of feedback on our Comments page about Backer’s desire to purchase Add-Ons and support the project. We would LOVE to be able to offer all sorts of cool BattleTech physical goodies for you to purchase but unfortunately, right now we can’t.

While we are able to offer some sweet physical rewards as a THANK YOU to Backers, we don’t have the rights to SELL physical goods to you in the form of Add-Ons. We’re working on it, though, and hope to be able to offer some cool physical Add-Ons before our Kickstarter campaign is over. If and when it happens, we’ll send you an Update ASAP!

I don't think everyone is on the same page here...

PGI "rented" the rights from Microsoft to make a video game in the Mechwarrior franchise. Mechwarrior is a Computer-based video game franchise, and is based on content from the BattleTech universe. PGI does not have any rights to produce physical goods based on the content of the Mechwarrior game franchise, nor do they have rights to produce physical goods based on the BattleTech gaming franchise.

Hairbrained might have acquired rights to produce physical goods based on the BattleTech franchise. Microsoft is not an owner of the BattleTech franchise.
