As much as I like seeing it flash for hits on non-locked targets, I think flashing ONLY for the locked target makes sense.
I voted for the new marker because it's more visible (yellow-to-red change isn't always easy to see), but it needs to be toned down. The 4 lines (broken X) in training grounds is nice but the W-shape I recall seeing during matches is overboard.

Why does it make more sense? Looking at other multiplayer games it seems absurd to me.

It just occurred to me that this new hit-marker system is going to be BRUTAL, when the info war acquisition delay quirks hit.

I have a mixed opinion with this.
First, I do not like the new target reticle for the IS mechs, but I do like the one for the clan mechs.
Second, in both cases I would prefer the reticle to glow red to indicate a hit.
Now for the issue of whether it needs a lock or not. I have a split opinion on that as well. I would say for direct fire weapons that do not require target guidance, they should require a lock to indicate a hit. However, for indirect fire weapons (missiles) the indicator should show a hit even if the target lock is lost while the weapon is in flight.
