This is where the "more or less" part about the MechLab kicks in. If you compare it to another 30 ton chassis with a maxed engine, the Urbanmech will cap at 97 kph I think, while another chassis would probably cap at... herp derpy... umm... 137 kph? Not quite sure. Need TT experts. At the same time, that chassis will probably cap at 4 tons of armor, where the Urbanmech caps at... 6?

I think instead of people saying "the Urbanmech is slow" they ought to say "The Urbanmech has different statistical caps than a typical 30 ton mech, with a bias towards armor and a short towards speed."

Which is a good thing! I still don't get how variety is bad.

In TT there is no limit based on the Urbanmechs chassis, it could be theoretically as fast as any other 30 ton mech, it simply comes down to an issue of weight. Desired walking mp times the mechs total tonnage gives you the mechs engine rating, and the walking mp times 1.5 is its running mp. The only issue is engine weight, as the faster you go the bigger an engine you need, and as size goes up so does weight. The problem is that Urbanmechs are always seen as 'that slow *** light mech that mounts a big AC/10 or 20.' An AC/10 weighs about a third of an Urbanmechs total weight, which is why its so slow as speed was sacrificed to mount it (and 2 tons of armor for the AC/20.) Even with an XL engine, the next size up is a 90 rated engine (for a walking and running speed of an Atlas) which would weigh the same, but now your mech will die if either side torso is destroyed. Anything larger and you have to remove the AC to get it, removing the 'punch' of an Urbanmech.

In my oppinion, the Commando needs some buddies/enemies in the 20 and 30 ton slots. If they're going to focus on "better units", why even include a 25 ton design?

Its already got the Jenner and Raven to fight and be buddies with. The Raven 1X is slower, and mounts 2 medium lasers and 1 SRM 6, and 4 tons of armor (unless they got rid of that 7 tons of ew gear before active probes and guardian suites existed) while the Jenner has 4 medium lasers and an SRM 4 and 4 tons of amor. It should be able to compete against either design, and for that matter a medium weight Cicada with 4 tons of armor and a couple of lasers (if it can catch it.) Considering it can compare favorable with designs heavier than it, why not include the Commando? I don't think its reason for being in the game is so the Urbanmech has something to fight. And one variant mounts an AC, so there is your ballistic light mech.

The Urbie is essentially a tactical. Meant to be a cheap way to defend or garrison a static area in support of light vehicles and infantry. It serves a purpose and I personally consider it good flavor. Even the 3050 source book referred to it as severly disliked by pilots (for many of the previously stated reasons). That said, the AC 10 will go internal on almost any other light mech in one shot.

If people want to go on about joke mechs, I submit the Q-mechs from the Luthien campaign setting. Those are cargo loaders and farming mechs with tacked on weapons and armor that tended to fall apart immediately.

I've always liked the UrbanMech mostly because of it's cute, egg-shaped style :)

Seriously, that thing almost looks as huggable as a teddy bear!

But this...this artwork...(Skyrim theme plays)

THAT URBIE LOOKS LIKE IT CAN ANNIHILATE AN ATLAS! CONQUER A CATAPULT! DESTROY A DRAGON! ALLITERATIONIZE AN ALLITERATION!

Also, the design kind of makes sense as a sniper design. That AC/10 can do some pretty decent damage from afar. It may be slow, but that 32 KPH speed can get you behind cover if an enemy starts shooting at you, right?

Being a long time TT BTech gamer..I can say that the Urbie is an awesome niche mech.

I remember setting this scenario up a long time ago using credits not BV.

Raiding scenario..attackers had Griffin, Victor, Grasshopper, Spider.

I think defenders had 12 Urbies and a Hunchback. (It may have only been 8 urbies)

Defenders won if the target building was not raided. (Entered by atleast one mech who then made it off map edge)
Attackers won if they got the loot off the map.

The urbies basically set up as semi mobile turrets in choke points with the Hunchback hiding in a building near the target.

Using house fog of war rules.. it was a brutal fight. Not only will an AC-20 one shot your head..an AC-20 to rear torso armor can also one shot most mechs.

The problem is..its an extremley niche event..and basically requires a scenario to have urbies in mind. (Tight corridors and defenders with a goal that doesnt require killing anything.)

So while I love the urbie in right environments..its definately a niche mech that should be introduced latter..not on launch.

They should hide a single UrbanMech in the training ground maps somewhere for you to find. Also, they should make it so that your shots bounce off it so that it's indestructable. Then when you get too close, it shoots you 1 time for 9,999 damage and kills you. You'd then get a message that says, "Killed by Unknown Mech, perhaps you should stay away from it in the future."

That's something I would do as a developer, anyway.

Perhaps the hero urbie could sport a brony colour scheme ;)

Even better the hero urbie could be painted like R2-D2 since it looks like the love child of R2 & 3PO :)

I dunno even in Battletech 3025 Urbies got their faces rocked by Javelins with 4 MLs. The urbie tends to get 1 shot off than it's big *** autocannon arm is blown clean off.

In MWO with the armor levels upped you won't lose the cannon as fast but your gonna be stuck waddle turning as a Raven/Jenner/Commando runs circles around you.

Might land a hit before they just chew up the slow Urbie.

We need a walking coffin, so the Urbie would fit that role perfectly.

Its more of a "joke" character, like something a Dan Hibiki would pilot.

At best it would provide a target for those silly enough to focus on an Urbie instead of something more dangerous (like an Atlas).

That is so OP. Nerf it so it won't become the next Uber Mech in this game!

So.... Just how competative is an Urbie?

Why does everyone assume the Urbie would stay stock engine?

Would they stay stock internals? Stock heat sinks? Stock armor?

Of course not.

If you use the Raven 4X and check out the spider for the max armor capable, you can test out Urbie builds.

I'd love to see the Urbie, and with the recent nerf of missiles, it might be able to be used, but I have my own doubts about it. Slow light mechs aren't exactly the main stay of the light metagame right now.

Wait, really? What was the formula for mech speeds, again? I could have sworn it was higher than that...

Engine Cap Formula:
Light Mechs = x1.4 base engine or x8.5 tonnage (whichever is lower)
Medium Mechs = x1.3 base engine
Heavy/Assault Mechs = x1.2 base engine

Urbanmech = 60 base engine x 1.4 = 85 max engine

With an 85 engine a 30 ton mech goes ~46kph or ~51kph with speed tweak

LOLZ.

Someone needs to modify this site to accept the imput of your mech of choice and loadout. Then replace five year olds with urbies!

I figure why not just have it in? I don't expect all mechs to be great.
