The original Mechwarrior that came out in 89 was similar in that lights could prey on the heaviest mechs.

You could take out a Battlemaster in that version with a locust loaded with mg's easily. Run up to it's legs and stay close just shooting legs out. The scale made the locust too short to be hit standing right next to the biggest assaults, they didn't have the torso yaw to aim down enough to hit them.

That version also had knock downs which was pretty cool. If you hit a light and some mediums with heavy enough ballistics it would knock them down.

Being hit with ballistics could also cause torso spin as well, for example if you were hit with ballistics on the left side of your torso, your upper body would spin to that side. The heavier the ballistics the more spin. With the right timing and aim you could prevent an enemy mech from even being able to face you for a good while.

I believe PPCs had the same effects as ballistics when it came to knockdowns and torso spin as well.

My parents computer was pretty slow so one battle usually took at least 45 minutes but it was a lot of fun though.

its primarily multiplayer. most of the other mechwarrior games had awesome single player elements. there was net mech and that was fun, but i enjoyed it primarily as a single player game.

I've been playing Mechwarrior games on and off for nearly 20 years now, after instantly falling in love with the universe via Mechwarrior 2. I've played through each of the titles and their various expansions more times than I care to remember (except I never found MW3:PM) and I don't ever recall anywhere near the level of balance issues and problems that make up everyday life in MWO. So what's different?

Perhaps most important to my perceptions is the fact that poor (or no) internet meant that I never had the opportunity to play any of these games in a multiplayer environment. Is there anyone here who might be able to recount there experiences and provide insight as to what was different?

I had a great time whenever I was playing one of the older titles, but I often find MWO to be draining and full of frustration. Is there a measurable reason for this? Or do I have rose tinted glasses on and simply never experienced the right conditions back then (multiplayer)?

MW3 had mechs that assaults could not shoot at point blank because they were so small. Filling light mechs with small lasers let you destroy anything in 2 shots. MW3 had atrocious hit registration and lag shielding making multiplayer a horrible experience. The single player was fun.

MW4 had non-canon builds due to the modified construction system. Every match was peek and shoot in multiplayer (just like it is now, surprise surprise!). I remember the Thanatos being quite popular due to the 180 twist. Game was pretty broken back then too. The single player was fun.

So differences?

Older titles probably did not have one unified forums that people frequented or forum raging wasn't as popular back then. Older titles had single player that you could view with rose-tinted glasses.

Similarities?

Multiplayer was worse for MW3 for me and MW4 players just like MWO only you blow up faster and it had Solaris free for all.

Solutions?

Delete the forums and MWO instantly becomes the best game of all time.

The internet is much easier to whine on now? And everyone can play this?

If you remember the old days. Gamers that played Mechwarrior 2, and 3, were generally more adult, focused players. You adapted, overcame, and just played. Because you wern't going to see constant patches to the games like you do now. You had a finished [mostly] product in your hands.

Also, it was a select group of individuals that played, remember, Internet wasn't super common when those games were at their height, hell MW3 was 99, internet as we know it was only just really becoming mainstream. Not only that, with MW2, it required a fairly beefy computer at the time, and that cost some serious cash... essentially a bar of entry [since MW2 came with a ton of different video cards as free software.]

We're also in the era of "Everyone has a right to their opinion." and "My opinion matters!" Because people think their complaints are justified, they voice them, even if all their evidence is anicdotal.

Combine that with the research done into PGI as a company [seriously go look up the games they've made, and the history of the company] the BS that IGP pulled [that nearly ran the good will of this community into the ground, and arguably actually did run it into the ground] And the fact that it takes PGI 2+ years to address glaring issues that everyone notices...

Yeah... it's a combination of a ton of things.

To those saying MWO isn't immersive... I do have to wonder about you. I've had some very immersive matches, especially in CW... but I will agree, there are times where the game isn't at all where it should be too.

MW3 you felt like you were in a big mech but lacked heavily in trees, brush, doodads. MW4 had great missions and storylines. MW2 had great immersion, Sound effects, and you felt like you were in a future time alien to our current lives a great escape.
