Hardlocked jumpjets, and they are not faster then almost anything. rather on the slow side of light'mechs.
They do however have very compact hitboxes and additional leg armor quirks (which is uncalled by many players).
SRM, SSRM, PPCS and any form of ballistics (especially gauss) scares the **** out of almost every ACH pilot. Like every compact other light like firestarters and spiders.

My firs mech were an Raven, and it along with the Firestarter are great beginner mechs if you have the patience to get used to the high speeds. The Raven might be a more laidback, relaxed sniper birdie, but does as the faster Firestarter need plenty speed to reposition and avoid dangerous focus fire.

I found it to be incredible fun. Then again what I do with the Zeus is I corner-LURM or hurl them while passing from cover to cover. You don't camp in any assault missile boat, you keep moving with the big guy taking all the bullets for you.

wow your job consists on playing games? where can i send my cv?
I have been a games writer for around 5 years. You just have to look for the jobs. I've left it mostly behind to work in games now.
Other than that, I have tried a few things:
1) The most fun I had was a Blackjack with 2 ER PPCs and a bunch of heat sinks. I can actually cause some damage and survive. Will be trying some of the other ones as well.
2) The best fights I have been in were when someone took control of the mic and coordinated the fights. The players just seemed to respond, and working as a group was so much more effective. I just tried to do what I was told.
3) I am not sure how to outfit a mech. I have cash for whatever, and re-upped my premium time, but I thought it'd be more like I can buy a mech, strip it, and then just pick from a large bucket of weapons. It seems like I pick a mech and then can only see certain weapons. But, like I want to try ACs, but there is no "gun store" where I can just pick up anything?
Thanks again all!

Very true. That's why I equipped my Zeus that way back when it came with the Resistance release. But an overload of game on Caustic with its angled crater quickly frustrated me.

Then I turned it into an SRM-fist, went brawling with it and never looked back.
Physical attacks would be so cool with that mech. It would be like punching a zombie in the gut with your shotgun and then you fire it.

So, if you check the mechs, there'll be a hardpoints section, detailing how many of what weapon type a mech can carry. For instance, as nifty as the Black Knight and the Crab are, both can only field energy weapons. The hunchback is an iconic begginer's mech because different variants each have a Specfic weapon type for it's hunch, be it the 4G ballistic hunch, or the 4J Missile hunch or the 4P energy hunch.
So, you gotta pick a mech that can carry the weapon you wanna purchase. The Blackjack for instance can never carry missiles, and a few variants can't even carry ballistics.

Thats a rare thing, solo pug queue uses to be a mess, join a group or try to learn to get the most out of the mess

I like two LPLs in the right arm, then medium lasers in the left. IS LPLs are lovely guns, with the incredible advantage of just not... -sounding- vicious at long range. Just a little laser splash, and most people who get hit won't actually take a lot of notice if they're already under fire.
Also, asymmetrical loadouts have tons of advantages over paired loadouts, ranging from easier group management to just weapon awareness.

Which is a first Urgent Lesson about MWO - damage mitigating Hitboxes (unintended by PGI) + Speed/Agility be more worth than high Armor Values @ Snail Pace (Assault Mechs get shred in a few seconds when caught alone/focussed).
Second Lesson - currently its all about Firststrike Capability/Alpha Damage (being able to unload your full weapon payload in one firestrike upon your target to maximize damage and minimize risk/exposure to enemy return fire).
I would not recommend playing a Light Mech as beginner - depending on your choice you will aquire bad attitudes that make you vulnerable in the slower Mechclasses and slow Lights are to vulnerable for a new Player.
Clan-Mechs be superior to IS-Mechs so PGI gave out some Buffs (Quirks) to IS-Mechs and some of them become incredible powerfull that way (Thunderbolt with Pulse Laser Quirks or Dragon with AC5 Quirks for example).
Hopefully that will be balanced in a forseeable future for the better.
Have Fun!

There is no "best mech" for everyone. There are a few that require more skills and there are some that require less. Although it depends on your piloting style. As a beginner, I found strong lights like Jenner or Firestarter the easiest, even when I started with the trial ones to collect some money to build up my mech bay. But that is because I like to scoot around, hit here and there and getting my points mostly though scouting and kill support and not with damage and kills. Other might find it more suitable to sit in a fatty that can eat up a lot of damage and deal some in return. The next one likes it to hide behind the broad shoulders of a fatty and add their damage output to the fattie's firepower from the second line, which would be best done in a fast medium such as a Blackjack 1X. You'll have to find a role that suits you and your style and once you are settled in the game you will certainly find one or two alternatives.
