Boiler Plate:Do not debate about MechWarrior and Battletech, this is a noob question.

I've never played a MechWarrior game beyond 2, and even then it was quick spurts of it while visiting relatives or over at friend's house. However, I found the idea of giant fighting robots so awesome that when I found out about the table top game, I started playing it...a lot.

I've never touched a MechWarrior game since 2. However I have experience in a myriad of games ranging from your classic RPGs(Diablo, Bulders Gate) to your Teambased FPS(TF2, Brink). When it comes to games I have a massive amount of experience culminating in the 1000+ hours I've sunk happily into TF2. My main question is what skills from those other games should I bring over and what skills should I toss aside. Especially with the more Team based cores, such as Team Fortress 2, each class has its own particular play style and that play style can be modified by the equipment you have. Its almost similar to MWO in that you have your different chassis classes which can be outfitted with a ton of custom stuff. However, I doubt attempting to rocket jump in MWO will end very will for me ditto with trying to backstab someone, albeit both are hilarious if attempted and failed/succeed in. I'm rambling now.

My question is, for a gamer whose coming at this with no experience in the actual MW franchise beyond light old childhood memories, how can I prepare for this game?

I'm not asking for a get good quick scheme, I just want to know what kind of mentality I should come into this game with.

I mean, I haven't played MWO yet, but from my experience with MW4 and WoT I'd guess that it's basically the same skills as TF2, but somewhat slower paced and more tactical most of the time.

Plus there's all the time you spend in the Mech Lab fiddling with stuff, but I'm sure you're used to that because of your tabletop experience.

Same with anything new I suppose, with an open mind.

Your aiming and such will help from the FPS games, but that's about it. The roles between TF2 and MWO aren't really that comparible. A scout runs the flag or plays offensive defense, as opposed to a scout mech tells the lay of the land and I guess can capture bases as well. You could compare the Heavy Weapons Guy and the Atlas, but there's no medic to uber you :)

You can always purchase Mechwarrior 4 and play through that.

You should practice situational awareness, teamwork, bravery, patience. Practice dispersion, and do not be fooled into chasing a scout, and the next thing you know you are surrounded. Meanwhile they are having a coin toss on who cores your mech, so don't be that kind of gamer. +1

Its going to be a slower paced game than most FPS games, as you won't be able to one-shot most Mechs. Find a group of players to game with, because the teamwork aspect looks to be one that PGI is going to push hard.

Well, I have not played it yet but I anticipate being a mix of infantry FPS like Red Orchestra, a multi-player flight sim, and a tank sim all rolled into one.

If you have crysis wars you can get MechWarrior Living Legends, I just downloaded it the other day, and if not, you can always get the free MW4, I'm in the exact same boat as you, actually even worse tbh, the last game I played was 2 as well so many years ago, but I didn't even play the table top, so about 2 weeks ago I didn't even know what LRM stood for, among many other noobish things.

EDIT: If you want a good thread of some noobish questions, go to my profile and look at the threads I've made. My first thread was just asking some nooby questions and I got a lot of really good answers, so you can check that out as well.

Alright, so I'm getting from this that while the broader FPS skills will be greatly used, I'll need to learn the specifics over time with this actual game. This is good to know.

And I lost my Battetech gear years ago, I played it heavily through my early teens and up to around 16 but our basement flooded and I lost everything. I remember all the acronyms, all the different bits and pieces of how the mech works, I forget how to make them work well together.

Although that's honestly an art.

You can download MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries and play it for free. It'll give you a good idea what to expect.

Reflexes

Maybe. I'd anticipate some roles to be far less reflex intensive than others. A fire support mech sitting way in the back isn't going to need the twitchiness of someone right up close in the fight I should think. A scout that actually scouts and assists in targeting more than direct fighting I'd also anticipate needing less reflex twitchiness.

IMO MWO will be closer to WoT then FPS for play style.

Also for those who bring it up, MWO will not have the draw backs of WoT's tier system, gold ammo & gold tanks.

At this stage about the only thing everyone will agree on is that you're definitely want to get an UrbanMech as soon as possible.

MWO is planned to be a lot more balanced between weight classes than previous MW titles, much like TF2 class play as you mentioned, so while playing MW4 is going to give you something of a feel for driving a mech again many of the specific weapon/mech characteristics are just going to be flat out wrong. Lasers dealing DoT rather than instantly now is the most obvious example of this.

Yup.. the free MW4 is a good option for getting the basic skills in place.. if you have Crysis Wars handy, there's a mod for that as well called "Mechwarrior: Living Legends".. pretty good also for getting your chops up..
