Without quirks or ghost heat we would be back to having cheese builds in no time, but I hear both are being axed.
Clearly nobody wants to go back to cheese builds, so what else could be done to help mitigate that.
Also, there is an element of the purist in my soul, and I like to have mechs with the loadouts they are supposed to carry, such as my favorite Orion that has the stock Orion weaponry, AC-10, LRM-15, SRM-4, twin medium lasers, but added a TAG laser to combat the ubiquitous ECM.
I think mechs should have a limit on how many hardpoints can be altered from what the stock loadout was. This includes the engine and empty hardpoints a stock build may have. I.E. You have a stock Centurion-9A with 8 hardpoints (6 weapons, an engine, and an AMS). You are allowed to modify any 4 of choice. In my case I would change out the engine, and replace all three missile launchers to be streak-2's.
Yes, i would do something similar for Clan Omni-mechs. They have replaceable pods, which you can do as much as you want, swapping out a ballistic arm for an energy arm is fine, but you will still be limited on how many hardpoints you want to change.
It's a weird idea, I know, and I hardly expect it to be taken seriously, but I though posting it could be fun.
