think maybe PGI made Clan engines too light? seems like we should be able to choose if we want endo-steek, Ferro, or Double Heat Sinks on clans..

The Clan engines are using their TT tonnage values.
I dunno why you'd want unlocked heatsink types, because DHS are mandatory all day erryday. The only Omnimechs that would ever want to change heatsink type are the Owens and Strider, and that's only because both of them come stock with hardwired SHS (ouch...).
The locking of Endo and FF is a double-edged sword. On one hand it gives Omnimechs more flavor and disinction from Battlemechs. It makes their customization process feel truly different, which is a cool effect. On the other hand, due to those upgrades being...upgrades, Omnimechs without them are generally inferior to Omnimechs that come stock with them.
I would however prefer to try to balance all of the tech upgrades and items against each other so that having or not having them wasn't an immediate banishment to the depths of the underhive.

i do not want to see Endo/ferro unlocked for clans/omnis
ferro needs to be improved so that it is equal to endo
a % damage reduction or a chassis based tonnage instead of armour based
because thats the real issue at hand here, FF is not as good as Endo, so unless you can fit both in a mech and very few can
your going straight for the endo every time
its not even a question
if FF actually made you harder to kill , well alot more people would be going for it even with its lower tonnage return

I've seen somebody suggest that buffing Standard Structure would actually be serviceable as an "indirect" buff to Ferro at the same time...
The logic goes like this. With that STD structure buff, you have to remove Endo-Steel in order to get that durability benefit. If you used Ferro with that STD structure, you'd save a bit of bonus tonnage while simultaneously still being more durable than a mech with Endo + STD armor.
The plus side to this is that it doesn't buff some of the optimized Clan Omnis with FF (TBR, SCR, EBJ, ACH). Admittedly though, the STD structure buff would indirectly buff the DWF and HBR... Still, I don't want to let those outliers get in the way of smoothing out the balance. Perhaps some kind of modest Clan XL nerf could accompany it to help keep things from getting crazy.

Along with isXL and STD (Clam Battlemechs too, and the occasional Terribad omni) engine.
Buff them to near parity, durability wise. STD paying for more durability with weight (significant structure buffs to STs and the CT, +20STs, +30CT).
