Found this trawling the net for Yukikaze Aircraft artwork to turn into Wallpaper for an Office.
Thought some of you might find it interesting.
The Locust is the only mech that still looks like the original mech!
I always thought BT was an american game that used Japanese art, not a Japanese game then then got passed on to the Americans (FASA).
These designs seem to predate the Macross ones.

I'm trying to debate whether they're derpier than the TRO3025 art or not...it's a close call I think.

****, I'm glad as hell we went away from that art style.

Most of those are actually painful to look at compared to what I have in my head.

TRO's are dated sure, but these are gundam as hell lol.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. They all look basically the same. Very pointy heads, and feet and lots of little fins and blades and antenna.

I've seen those before but I didn't know they pre-dated American Battletech.... It's always been Battletech's resemblance to Robotech that has caused the most consternation between the two genres....

The japanese are like some strange randomly generated RPG character.

  • Do not attempt in real life: Your character excels at video games, but is a terrible driver in real life.
Sorry, this is really racist, isn't it? I'm half-Scandinavian and half latino if you want to have a go at my peoples :)

Actually, if you look at several of those images, they are dated in the bottom left for 1992, the same year Battletech tried (and failed) to be successful in Japan. Interestingly, info on it is hard to find (I know Sarna has an entry on it somewhere. They have the images after all), but this quote confirms the date for this failed foray,

Quote

A Japanese edition of BattleTech was licensed by FASA in 1992[17][18]; it had new artwork provided by Studio Nue[19].

So, your initial understanding was correct.
Battletech was made first in the US in 1984 and boosted designs from a few animes from the early 80s. The designs you linked were made in 1992... and thankfully forgotten and buried in a deep dark hole.

edit:
Seriously. I think the designs Tactics used are better than these... things. And I loathe what Tactics churned out.

Some designs carry an odd resemblance to Hawken mechs. Weird.

Studio Nue also did some of the IIC mech redesigns we currently use... like the Locust.

Actually some of the art was reused in the Solaris Box set as new mechs used on the gaming world.

Personally, I always thought the Japanese BattleTech artwork looked very "Armored Core"...
