Have 2 similar Atlas builds (prefer brawling):

2ML
1 AC20
3 ASRM6
ECM
Std 350

2 LL
1 AC20
3 SRM6
ECM
Std 325 (?)

with a std 350 speed is similar to Mauler, Atlas has more armor and ECM. What does a Mauler have to offer over Atlas? Or, in other words, how do their roles differ?

Thanks

The biggest difference is that the Atlas has better arms for tanking and ECM while the Mauler has better hardpoints.

These are the DDC builds I use, Ultra5's and AC20.

Each torso having ballistic hardpoints gives the mauler some incredible firepower potential. AC20's and Gauss. Maulers in general have more hardpoints than the atlas, so more diverse loadouts can be made.

Mauler is not a Brawler, you may do ok but just not what its meant to do.

Thanks for the replies.

So, with all the changes that have been implemented in MWO (larger maps, teamspeak, etc) what exactly is/are the unique roles of the Assaults as opposed to the Heavies?

Mauler is used for med range damage. Example: 300-500 meter range.
Closer then that, the rotation of the torso and the arm movement slows the usefulness of the mech.

Atlas is good for, HEY SURPRISE! I'm in your face. Also, the availability of the Atlas hardpoints are mostly similar, and many people have built it into a long range monster. Or, some of the builds gives it nasty at all ranges.

I have 2 Mauler builds that copy the older meta of BLAM BLAM BLAM, Ahhh my torso! And it's difficult when my enemies get too close to me.
Mauler: All Chassis

2 PPC/// ER or regular
2 Gauss
Extra weps have fun if you want them.

2 PPC// ER or Regular
2 Ac/20
Get in 300 meters and blast away.

The Atlas is limited with the ballistic hardpoints, but the Atlas makes up for it with beam hardpoints or missile hardpoints.

Mauler can do the same, but will suffer from weak belly syndrome.

Maulers don't like to tank anything at all, but you can rig them to do some pretty mean and fast dps.

Well rigged atlas's can be pretty brilliant in delivering that kick in the nuts right up front if you get good at spreading the damage to those beefy arms.

Two different beasts, while Atlas is a brawler, Mauler is long-med line holder, phalanx if you want.
With lower engine cap, not really great turning but has superior weapons points and selection
and can even do XL, I mean xc-90 can do viable 5x5ac build .
Which is better, depends only on range at the start of engagement, since both use mostly direct fire weapons,
ECM wont be so potent...therefore anything above 500 m will play in favor of Mauler, 300-500 depends on builds
but i would still give edge to Mauler, 200-300 skill will come to play, and SRM hit reg problems, below 200 think Atlas
can still clean out the floor.
From my experience both resistance assaults can take on Atlas .

The Mauler is a Missile boat or a AC one, the Atlas is just a brawler even with lots of LRM launcher on it, it is kinda is stuck to brawl.

The Mauler is more flexible but never will be a full brawler

the awnser is neither... use a dire or warhawk....

Mauler has far worse hitboxes than the Atlas but the atlas has completely insufficient weapon mounts for todays game...
so decide yourself which horse you will ride...

I'll brawl just about anything in my MAL-2P with 2 UAC5, 6 ML, and St 325 engine. Maybe not as tough as an Atlas or as game breaking as some huge Alpha Dire Whale build but my "Green Dragon" is fast, mean, and good at leading pushes in solo drops or team games.

The ECM Atlas is a way more flexible platform. I think some people make the mistake of thinking it's a brawler. It's not, although the chassis does tank well. Use your Atlas like it was intended, as a Command Vehicle. I put double LRM15s on mine so I can sit in the middle or back of a group and cover them with an ECM bubble while supporting. Only after the enemy is damaged and the LRMs are all fired do I move in for the kill with my AC20 and double Mediums. Trying to brawl with an ECM Atlas almost invariably ends up with you losing your ECM bubble to an enemy Active Probe or Beagle. Then you're pretty much stuck with a good, but behind the Meta, tank.

I agree with Mercworks, the DC isn't a dedicated brawler. I run it with AC5's+cooldown modules, LRMS10x2, BAP, and 2 medium lasers. It doesn't seem like it would be that effective, but it is. ECM (pluse radar derp) helps keep you from taking nibble damage from SRMs and LRMs. The atlas is just not seen as that big of a threat when compared to: EBJ, TW, DW, WHK, or KCrabs. You can put down a lot of damage from the AC's before you start getting focused on.

3 of my 4 Mauler builds are AC20 builds. The other is ac5x3 build. You have a lot more hard points for various builds and high AC mounts in the torsos. I doesn't seem to tank as well as the atlas imo, but it can put out good DPS. It is hampered by its lowly 325 engine cap. The MAL are XL engine friendly, but with a cap of 325, you can't get to the 340-360 sweet spot.

Also have seen DDC with a good supportive team move in and use the ECM Counter to allow dedicated rear line LRMers to lock. on ECM protected Red clusters. The Atlas & company would destroy as the missiles rained down.

Dusted off my Brawler DDC the other day and took it for a spin I found it to have reasonable firepower and armour. What let it down was range so you have to pick your battles carefully before committing (ECM helps with this). I can down any Heavy or smaller Assault one vs one with no problem. I usually have a 50/50 chance of beating a Dakka King Crab and I have yet to directly fight a Mauler while we are both fresh, but I'm confident of being able to take one on.

SRM hitreg is very spotty right now which makes the older DDCs even less worthwhile with all the power creep, go for a meta mauler.
