Although I am not certain, I think it is because of two reasons.

1) Comstar I thought stayed relatively isolated and close to Terra. They really didn't get too involved with Inner Sphere in-fighting. Since this game is about the Inner Sphere fighting, it probably wouldn't fit.

2) Comstar had more advanced weaponry (carried over from the Star League) than the Inner Sphere. It would become a balance issue.

That is how I would understand it. I'm sure somone will correct me if the facts are a bit off.

ComStar doesn't really become a faction (from a combat perspective) till after the Clans invade. As to joining, you'd have to talk to Precentor-Martial-Troll Paul about that...

And ComStar was secretly allied with the Clans till they realized Terra was in danger and said:"Screw it, let's beat them into the ground."
So Tukkayid happened, where 4 Clans got their butts kicked, 2 Clans barely won a draw, and one Clan won.
So a 15 year truce was made, so the I.S. could build up for a second Clan Invasion.

1) For a technological/religious order with HPGs (HyperPulse Generators) everywhere in the Inner Sphere not to mention a massive, secret army at their disposal (ComGuards)....yeah...they seem pretty "isolated" to be sure.....lol. :)

2) This is true. Although to be fair I think ComStar SHOULD be a playable faction....if only to show the Clan haters that the Clans are not the only ones with advanced tech..... :)

I think it would be awesome if the Devs, should they ever play in-game, had ComStar insignias and better tech than the rest of us :)

At this moment in the timeline, ComStar still pretends to be neutral.

You'd be fairly bored if you could join them, because you couldn't fight any battles. Literally. ComStar didn't even admit to owning 'Mechs until the battle of Tukayyid in 3052 (i.e. three years from now).

Do you honestly want to render yourself unable to play the game? :)

As was said Comstar was neutral in the wars between the great houses. They were the ones who kept the communications up and running for everyone.

After twenty-one days of fighting the ilKhan of the Clans conceded victory to ComStar. Of the Clans, only the Wolves had successfully gained control of both target cities, with the Ghost Bears earning a maginal victory for holding Spanac but failed to take Luk, and the Jade Falcons achiveing a draw based on inflicting far greater losses than they took. But both sides suffered staggering losses in the process. Though victorious, the relatively green Com Guards took more than forty percent fatalities, with even more injured. Despite their much higher level of experience and life-long training, the various Clans suffered almost as bad, with the Wolves taking the least fatalities at 20 percent through to the Diamond Sharks forces who were virtually wiped out.

ComStar revealed their army all the way back at the end of the Fourth Succession War, actually. It's true that it doesn't (officially) participate in any fighting until Tukayyid, though.

Maybe the OP is just not interested in piloting a 'Mech and would prefer to roleplay a Comstar acolyte by making strange gestures before opening his email program or something?

Yeah i think comstar should be a playable faction.
But all comstar players should drive phone company repair vans.

As long as ComStar continue to provide the Draconis Combine with limited 'advanced' technology, I'll be happy, Mmmmm... C3 Computers....

I suppose I should have worded that different. I meant that they stayed out of Inner Sphere politics and wars for the most part. They might have been pulling some strings behind the scenes, but they were directly militarily attacking the IS and mixing-it-up. That is why I thought it would be 1 of 2 reasons they wouldn't be a good entry in the game.

My bad. The ComGuards as an organized military unit weren't revealed until Tukayyid, the presence of 'Mechs in general was.

Here is my idea: ComStar = Devs
huh huh yeah yeah, whaddaya all think?
They are the 'power behind the power', they hold all the best cards yet rely on other 'players' to supply them sustenance as they lack an abundance of Agriculture worlds. I think both in metaphor and for balance this works. (That being said In RP I have played a ComStar agent and it was allot of fun, but also had more restrictions than any other 'faction' even the Clanners and I think would NOT be fun to play in MWO)
