Yesterday I paused at a stop sign as another vehicle off towards the left made a left hand turn. As I waited I saw another vehicle stop behind me in my mirror. As the other vehicle made the turn I heard the engine of the vehicle rev behind me and then I felt the impact. Minor damage only, but hit hard enough to put a hole in my rear bumper, even if it was only a cheap piece of plastic junk. The lady who hit me didn't even bother to ask if I was okay, but rather "Just be glad I didn't hit your harder." She got a ticket for failure to control a vehicle after she told the officer, "I thought he was already gone.". I know it was rude of me when I then said. "Do you need @#$%ing glasses or something!". The cop gave me an odd look as he handed her the ticket. It's not like I drive a small car or anything, more like a mid-sized log wagon on wheels.

A state department vehicle. Nice. Hate to be the fellow who had to do the paperwork on that one.

Typical. No apologies at all, right?

That reminds me of yesterday at the grocery store... I was waiting in the checkout line and there was one lady in front of me. She has a cart full of stuff and she never bothers putting it on the belt. When it gets to her turn she THEN starts putting it on the conveyor. That's when I knew I was in trouble. She left a pack of water on her cart beneath everything and asked the lady to scan it. She didn't even move the cart or anything to help. She just said... "Can you scan this?"

So the cashier couldn't scan it. She couldn't even come close to reaching it. Lucky for her she had a upc code on her register. But it gets worse. The lady then has to pay. This all happened at Kroger. For those that don't know Kroger, understand they have this card called the plus card that helps you get sale items at a discount. Kroger will even give you one for free if you ask. You don't even need to fill out anything if you don't want to. The cashier asks for the card. The lady says, "Is that a rewards card?" The cashier tells her no. It is a store card--and offered to give her one. The lady had no idea what the cashier was saying. Now, mind you, the lady was American and spoke fluent english. She did not have any trouble comprehending anything AND I know she was a local because her daughter had a t-shirt on of a local sports team. This wasn't no traveling chicken.

So what does the lady do? She bickers back and forth with the cashier for five minutes, then finally gets on her phone and calls her CREDIT CARD COMPANY to ask about her rewards for the twenty or thirty dollar grocery store purchase! All this while the rest of us are standing in line waiting...

Several minutes later she hangs up... and instead of completing her purchase... asks the cashier to void the order. So she has to get a manager... then void the order... then... what does the lady do? She takes her cart up to customer service!

The nerve of some folks. She seemed as if she had no idea what was going on in the world. She didn't even turn to apologize to us waiting for taking up our time like any other sane, polite person would have done.

So back to the original post... I had a lady rear end me once while she was on her cell phone. I got out of my car and screamed at her. I was... upset. And guess what she had the nerve to do? She KEPT TALKING ON HER PHONE AFTER THE ACCIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Moral of the story: people are A-holes and you can do nothing about it.But seriously, some people just make me lose hope in humanity.

Here in South Australia the annual road toll is around 100. Predictably the authorities bleat every year about it being too high and how something needs to be done. This usually accompanies a predictable rise in speeding fines and other road rule enforcement.

Whilst this figure in a state of about 1.2 million people is with out doubt awful, what astounds me is the fact that it is not much, much higher. The amount of stupidity I see on the roads on an almost daily basis is truly astounding. It is a testament to how well cars are built theses days with the safety systems they have now. It is certainly not because people have become better drivers, that's for sure.

Just last Friday I was coming home from the dentist with my wife and daughter. I live in the hills and all the roads are narrow, single lane each way, twisty and generally slow going. The speed limit in this area is 80km/h. As I was leaving a small town with a steady climb up hill some clown in a V8 ute (pickup) decided to overtake me in a spot that is dubious at best. Crossing double white lines (a no passing area) he roared past into oncoming traffic. If I hadn't seen (heard) him coming and braked hard he would have had no gap to get back onto the right side of the road, such was the lack of distance between my and the oncoming car. The oncoming car had to brake heavily as well. If it wasn't for my and the oncoming drivers vigilance this idiot would have caused, solely through his impatience, a 3 car pile up involving at least 5 people. Somebody would have been killed for certain. If I could have caught him I would have taken his plate no. and reported him to the police. Wish I had had a Go Pro attached to the car that day. Morons like this shouldn't be allowed outside let alone behind a steering wheel.
