Could this be paving the way for a single player campaign or similar further down the line?
Would love to see some sort of survival mode where you drop in to fight endless streams of AI mechs and keep a high score of enemies eliminated.

So they better make that MW5 a reality if they want to stay in the BT game business..
My guess would be that they scatter the PVE elements all over MWO, and make it so that you HAVE TO play regular MWO to get PVE unlocks..
Similar to some other MMO games, you would have to hit a certain tier, buy a certain mech, or win a certain planet to unlock a certain Campaign.
Making us buy the campaigns would be a total waste.. yes, founders and rich kids would buy, but no one else..
Better to make warriors "Pay for expenses" or "Bid for glory of attending" a campaign in c-bills (like 20 million or something)

PvE campaign can be sold and hoard mode adds to the options of how to play.
The development of AI for the PvE can then be ported over to PvP. It has to be easier to start to write AI for a controlled environment like a PvE campaign than PvP

The engine is ready, mechs are ready, give me a good single player campaign with action, story, cinematcis and I am willing to bring the dollars. If its good!
I enjoy PVP but It would be a good diversion.
Coop...
Maybe play campaign maps with convoy escort missions in PVP..... The possibilities....

Why should they do that? MWO is a totally different game and not comparable to a turn-based game. It won't steal any customers unless we have MWO players who dislike multiplayer but then I ask why they are here at all.

Competition for cash is a powerful force.

Example in MWO Campaign 1 , ( made up ) You are a Frontline unit Battlemech warrior fighting for House Steiner the main character and unit may be shared in both games in single player missions or refer to each other in cinematic content,...doing this feeds lore as well as makes both games expansionary complementing each other.
