"There's 27 other threads saying that nothing is being played but skirmish on cold maps. So, I can't see how assault is even happening right now"

I get assault when skirmish isn't offered.

Skirmish vs Assault = Skirmish
Skirmish vs Conquest = Skirmish
Assault vs Conquest = Assault

and always on the coldest map

The best course of action when a chunk of your team runs off to cap the base is to play defensive initially. I don't mean hide at your base until you're a lance down. Get a good firing line going where you can engage their main force and they can't push you easily. You're down a lance, but so will they be once they split to save their base. When they do, you switch to aggression mode and push the remaining guys.

If they don't react you straight up win via cap. If they do react they will need an equal or greater size force to push 4 mechs off their base. That gives you your chance for a decisive combat victory. In my experience teams will usually over-react to a base rush if they react at all.

I have had some really fun wins from assault modes that start off as cap rushes. But it's all about getting the non-cappers to react decisively.

One thing I have learned is how to tell what tier you are fighting (generally speaking)
If you go cap there base and there whole team shows up and kicks the crap out of you then you are playing tier 1 or 2

The lower tiers tend to trickle in one at a time and caping can be a useful tactic in drawing mechs away from the main fight

The main thing to remember is the more responsive your team is the better the chance for a win
So don't get lead in your feet

"Sounds like they just want to get it over with so they can move on to the next match which they hope will be Skirmish instead of anything with capping."

That needs its own thread. The brats get Skirmish-Cold 3 times in a row, and then ditch the first cap drop they get? When the Conquest lights see too much of it, they'll start drawing out the Skirmish matches with a Last Man standing revenge?

This is one of the major drawbacks of map voting. In the past, when players got mad about maps and modes, it was PGI's fault. And so the players would send nasty emails or come gripe on the forums about it. PGI is far away. But not anymore - the people responsible for the game mode and map are right there in the game. And they are turning on each other.

Lights rush base, enemy team comes at you, keep them distracted, hit and run don't try to fight them face to face. The only thing the enemy can do is lose by cap or split their force and go back for the base. At this point you can either keep it up if they've only sent 1-4 guys back, or if their force is further split you can push into them and begin to take them out.

Its all about how you play and far too many people are more used to 12v12 deathball tactics that when teams do something differently they can't follow along, or if done correctly the enemy team can't figure out how to counter it.
