In the PTS, PGI has been trying a new graphic style for hit confirmation on the crosshair, adding additional flashing details in place of the old colour change. Apparently, the change was introduced to present a more fair experience for colour-blind players as well as to wrap the feature into info-tech, placing emphasis on locking targets and slowing down combat.

I like PGI's intention here, but I don't really like the approach. Namely, it is harder to use for non-colour-blind players, and it blends harmfully against explosions or other moving objects directly underneath the crosshair when damage actually occurs.

As an alternative to the new system, I would like to offer a different solution.

Instead of having any change appear on the crosshair itself, add a new icon to the HUD, offset from the center of the screen. I'm thinking something along the lines of a graphic that flashes a different colour on successful hit, offset both horizontally and vertically.

This should satisfy the needs of all audiences. Please note that this thread only attempts to improve the visuals of the on-hit confirmation and does not address whether or not the graphic should only register with locks or what-have-you.

TL;DR:
  • We need a hit confirmation system that doesn't clutter the screen around the crosshair.
  • Colour change is very good for most people.
  • Separate geometry from the crosshair benefits colour-blind players.

Haven't played PTS myself, but a flashing crosshair doesn't really feel the best for hit detection indication. I agree there is room in the HUD for a new symbol for hits.

Perhaps this could be an option?
In game settings allow users to select from a few different reticules including changes in hit indication for color blind.
Easy fix. Good idea you posted and i think it would be a good inclusion in the set of options.

Did a little testing on testing grounds.

Just trying to work further from your "red box" for a hit detection indicator. I did some fancy editing adding an animated crosshair next to the weapon groups. I think this could work since you already get different hit detection info from your arm and torso mounted weapons by the color changing targeting circle for the former and the crosshair for the latter.

IDK if those are too confusing and too small, but this my take on it.

I really like InsaneRotta's rendition, especially given how it's taller than it is wide. I had imagined potentially adding in some sort of on-hit indicators for the individual weapon groups too, but didn't care to put as much effort into my mockup. I've added your image to the OP with credit.
