As of the number of mechs available and those coming out continually, I think its a real good time to drop the 3 mech requirement on the skill tree. It is not needed anymore to see more varied mechs on the battlefield.

Even with the 14 million (correct me if I am off) from the new player bonuses that means you only can play one weight class to master your mechs. (EG Ravens). Remove the 3 variant requirement and let the player experience more of the weight class/tonnage mechs while getting rewarded.

Agreed. This actually does a lot to discourage me from trying out a new mech knowing I'll have to pilot 3 different variants of that mech to master it. The skill tree/mastery system is so bloated and feels more controlling (and a little like a cash grab) rather than instilling a sense of progression. I think this would be a first step towards a larger streamlining of the pilot/skill trees that needs to be made to give a good first impression to new players. The way it is now feels too much like a grind and like I'm being forced to play a certain way.

Feels like a grind?

Have you not played a Free-to-Play game before? That's what it's supposed to feel like. It's supposed to encourage you to open your wallet to progress faster.

This was never about seeing more varied 'Mechs on the battlefield. It was about increasing the time when going from the first time you pilot a 'Mech to mastering all of the Mech Skills on it. Without that, the mastery process would be way too quick for a F2P game. They wouldn't make any money because players wouldn't be annoyed enough to spend money.

For a F2P game, grind is good.

As much as I love this idea from a customer standpoint, i'm guessing it would have a significant negative impact on the amount of revenue generated. The current system forces us to buy more mech bays than we otherwise would. Less mechbay purchases = less revenue.

I have bought one mechbay ever and have something like 17 mechs.

Grind in a F2P game is fine, but if MWO wants to keep players during the new player bonuses it needs far more depth, than just playing one mech chassis (EG, maxing out 3 raven to competitive level to make cbills). I really can't see any reason now, with so many mechs avaiable and coming out, it is needed anymore

Why not let the player choose and buy what he wants to play versus being forced to buy and play a bad variant to master a mech he enjoys playing?

How does said newbie player KNOW he doesn't like the "bad" variant? Because he can't fit it exactly like the one he's got? That doesn't make for a bad variant -- that makes for learning how to fire other weapons and play other styles. He'll likely need that to pilot other chassis anyway.

And it's still required to make 'Mech mastery take longer. If you could master just the exact variants you wanted, you'd get to the "I have all the 'Mechs I want ... now what?" point faster.

In this game you will probably not have all the mechs you ever want with the release rate of mech packs. Also with all the mechs currently in the game, I doubt anyone would be happy with just only 3 mastered Light mechs with competitive loadouts (according to C_Bill earning from new player bonuses, correct me if its above 15 mil). Hell in CW you need 4 mechs, which should at least include a heavy. Plus the "I have all the mechs I want now what?" is already happening with the veterans from Closed Beta in a serious way. I think they are more interested in MWO having more depth than this rule of 3 varients and having a larger community.

Every time I try to get people into this game, it is nearly impossible because of the grind and overpirced MC cost they keep going back to warframe or Planetside 2 (as it offers a much bigger playground and depth with similar real world cost of digital goods). Until CW comes around the MWO community will not get any bigger, even more in the case of the 3 varient rule (doesn't give much variety to the new player).

For reference I have 68 mechs, mostly IS and still am buying more with C_Bills. Saving for clan as much as I can but then I keep on adjusting my mechs and C_Bills disappear fast. CW Phase 3 cannot come soon enough...

i think 3 varriant its may be not bad idea. But now it works illogical. If u want to master mech u need any mechs of weight category. But for elite u need variants of that chassis. May be better to swap that? Its more logical, more sparing for new players and u need bye 3 variant only if u want to use module slot. Now in my hungar most of mechs its unused variants. Just cause sell price pretty low, and i dont know what happenned after rebalance.
