To start with... The voting thing doesn't bother me, aside from it meaning I'm not likely to see my personal favorite map (Viridian Bog) as often... but I always play with all game modes checked, so it doesn't grind my gears as much as others.

But, it does seem to bother a lot of people, and I have a suggestion for a compromise.

Only have the voting system apply to group queue.

I'm not 100% sure on the reason for the voting system being implemented... I assume it's for when a group of players is stuck sitting around for 5-10 minutes waiting for a match. As a solo player, I rarely wait more than a minute or two, which seems like a reasonable wait to me. I alt-tab and fiddle with other things in between.

With a group, the inability to have 100% control is less of an issue too, as you can heavily favor the voting towards one side or another. With a 12-man, it's a virtual sure thing, unless you're against another 12-man who vote for the other option...
