Either let them have a go solo first.
Or
Private matches where they can train against you. But you need 2 peeps with premium time running.

EDIT: And I definitely can't ask any of them to put money up for MC if they don't know they will like the game

Will the rest of the teams then be filled with solo que players? Or would it just be the 4 of us?

I recall the Immortals beta MOBA
Non moba players were thrilled to be able to try out Moba like gameplay in PvE and not PvP or PvAI

On the other hand... I typically throw my friends head first into group queue and its the grind rather than the difficulty that tends to drive them off. You just have to make sure they know they're gonna get wrecked a lot until they've played a few hundred matches.
Oh.... best idea. Stock mech monday. Grind enough cbills on their account for a decent stock mech and let them have at it there. Games are friendly and everyone is using 3025 tech so TTK is lower and builds aren't optimal.
Also, if you want I have premium time so I can help out with the 2 premium user requirement if you give me a couple days notice. Just don't ask me to teach them the meta since I mostly run AC20 ravens and other unholy abominations.

I guess it didn't even occur to me that I could gift them some premium time so we could play like that. How does one go about doing this?

If they like the gameplay, I'm not too worried about them being discouraged by the grind. We were all heavy pvpers in a Korean MMO which is about as grindy as you can get.
That said, "Stock mech monday"? League matches? Where are you guys getting these concepts? In all the time I've been playing MWO (off and on since closed beta), I've never seen anything like that...

here is the link to the gift shop
https://mwomercs.com/gifts
the minimum you can gift is 7 days i guess and that is 6 USD.
I think the best way to go is setting up private matches... i've been part of a training session before. it is very effective. Acting as the enemy or teammate, there are lots and lots of info you can show them without them feeling they are at the bottom of the food chain...

It won't work with new accounts. Only existing accounts will work (I think the most recent snapshot was like last week or so).
My best suggestion is find a friend or unit member that has active premium time to run it WITH you, so that you can avoid having to buy premium time for one new person (you and that person will have to be on opposite sides of the private match, which is probably most appropriate anyways).
If you want to gift premium time, you'd probably want to do it through the gift store OR give them a Karma Koin card to allow that player to buy MC and then premium time.

Get a small amount of premium time and set up some private matches.

The reason for this is that i've been guiding 2 guys on how to flank using mechs with 100 kph or faster speed without getting chased down by light mechs...too often.
I found that those stories they told me often allowed me to point out their mistakes or they just pointed them out themselves.
The fact that they told me their warstories made them remember their mistakes better so they learned much faster.

this way you can cover more material. (e.g. having mechs with BAPs, ECMs, TAG, LRMs, NARCs, PPCs at the same time can really help you show them what each one does)
try setting them up in the spectator slot once too. and show them different strategies in flanking, 1v1 , 2v2 battles, etc...
