What does it mean?

Do I play against better players?
What is measured that decides that I am Tier 3?

Either I have gotten really bad really fast or I am playing against better players, would like to know :)

as a new player you start in tier 4 (1 is best 5 is worst) depending on your performance in game you gain or loose points, get/loose enough and your tier changes.
the exact formula has not been published but if you win an average score will have you go up, below average will have you stay the same, an above average will have you gain a lot
if you loose below average score will have you loose some points, an average game has you stay the same and an above average game gives you a small gain, and a really bad game has you loose a lot.

unfortunately the scoring is 50% based on damage, so unfairly favors heavy and assault Mechs over lights and mediums

each tier represents player skill level, as a tier 3 you could theoretically be up against anyone, a game will try to form with all people from the same tier but if there are not enough players in your tier in the queue it can form a game with people from up-to 3 tiers, so in tier 3 you can be up against tier 1&2, tier 2&4 or tier 4&5, you are perhaps now seeing a lot of tier 2&3 players who you are probably not used to playing against, if you keep loosing you will drop back to tier 4

OK that explains it, I have had a blast in a Heavy mech with mpls, I think I will play Mediums and Lights for a while an probably go down to Tier 4 again.

The team Winning or Losing is the biggest effect on tier. Playing badly intentionally so you go down a tier is just silly.
Perhaps enjoy fighting better opponents and learning to improve is more rewarding?

Hey man, if he prefers to fight weenies, that's fine. Some people prefer less challenge and more pew pew. I'm with you. I prefer to be pushed to be better but not all are the same :)
