Just a thought:

What if lasers did not do damage till the target was hot?
For example; Each fraction of a second of laser contact only heated up the target
until the target got hot, then the laser starts to cut.

Just a thought that could bring lasers in line with the other weapons.

Wadiyatink?

PS, sorry if this was already talked about.

Sad thing is, not even then Flamers would be useful. -_-

Flamers FTW! :)

Basically we are just talking about a slight delay for the laser weapon to apply damage? Might as well just make the beam duration longer across the board and spare the additional mechanic.

I assume any combat laser works through ablation and not just heating metal until it starts to melt. Otherwise you would need a very stationary target and methodical cutting techniques.

I don't think lasers need a debuff. I think we need convergence instead. We might not be ever getting it, but a man can dream...

flamers could have increasing damage. The more you "flame" the more damage it does.

I was thinking it would be cool to shut down an enemy mech from laser heat.

...this would likely require quite a bit of additional programming.
so, not gona happen.
