Hate to break it to you but people coming in from steam are going to be 99% solo pugs or maybe at most 1-2 friends. And they will not want to commit time to joining a unit and training before they jump into games. Sorry but expecting steam players to do that is just totally unrealistic.

huh?

Why are steam players any different then us? They have games on steam with guilds whats the difference?

We already have a crap ton of units here for them to join, most just need to apply and im sure some will come bring friends and make their own just like we do.

Do i expect every single one...no not in the slightest.

Some of my steam fiends have already installed the game to check out what I've been talking about.
The good responses have been surprisingly 60/40 good and bad.
What they didn't realize was the learning curve was so steep for them.
But surprisingly good reviews overall.
On a side note now that's it's going live, I'm organizing a Lurmageddon 2 party for them.

Any one have any good ideas?

1) Seal clubbing, season is open.

2) "in sorrow will your skills come to birth".... it should be a bible verse, if I remind correctly

3) avoid completely solo que. Dropping in group with at least 5-6 friends

I'll add new good ideas later.
Meanwhile I'm pretty sure that the uberpowered Infotech will save steampuggies in trial mechs, after dat damn good tutorial, of course....

...

..maybe.
Well, maybe not.

Gonna laugh when people drop into this game and play it for what it is, and not what it was or what people think it should be and start smoking "veterans".

How many people do you think that's going to be? I think you underestimate the advantages that veterans have over new players, and not just because they're better and/or more experienced.

I wonder if people are actually going to feel bad about it when they seal club whole green lances.

My thoughts are thus,

We the established players need to reach out in a positive & helpful manner. We need to make guides, recruit newbies into our units, post links/make guides easy to find. We can post reviews on Steam that are honest but positive.

My biggest worry for Steam isn't the state of the game but the negative, butthurt players trying to ruin the future of this game.

You're joking right? Or are you talking about Vets that screw around in AC20 Ravens & stock mechs?

I have already made a guide, but i won't be updating it.

Why invest in a game which as a minimum effort model? I mean i dont see my time bought back aside for appreciations from new players.

Well, if I'm being positive, Steam could actually be a breakout for MWO. With the new BT game coming that could help MWO's visibility. It could happen.

I know you're sour because things haven't panned out how you wanted. Maybe take a break & come back in a bit. I think, considering Pgi's size, they've shown a fair amount of effort, especially since dumping IGP. They just hired 3 more new people, I can see them getting faster & faster with development. Pgi isn't some big time company like Bioware or Infinity. They just won't be able to match those guy's production. That means mistakes are more painful & time consuming. But idk, maybe a break could help you.

As far as a guide benefiting you? Other then the satisfaction of helping newbies? Perhaps you could become sort of community famous or maybe be happy supporting a BT game, why do you take the time to post on the forums? I don't know you, so it could be just about anything.

Allowing a 2 man of newplayers to drop in the soloque for their first 25 matches would probably be a good idea. Otherwise they are going to be slaughtered in the group or solo que. Maybe a short tutorial vid from some vets steering them towards decent trial mechs. I guess were all going to have to put our nice pants on for awhile and try to help instead of the normal "GETREKTNOOBLOLOLOL!"

If anyone wants to put together a video guide, etc, I'd be willing to help.

Any guide should probably be put out the 8th or 9th with links, etc, to make sure it's current.

And this is why we have such a Poor New Player Experience and New Player Retention. Newbies trying to play a TEAM GAME as a Solo / or as 2-3 friends Hell. Every effort should be made to get these newbies into a unit asap...... It is truly sad that so many players refuse to play a team game as a coordinated team, and then they wander why they get stomped 9 times out of 10 when pugging.......

other wise we have the forums alive with 2 kinds of threads:

4+ premades playing as a coordinated TEAM are stomping / Baby Seal Clubbing us over and over......AAAAUUUUUGGGGG...!!!!! Rage Quit.....!!!!

or:
Every game 1/2 my team scatters like stray cats and promptly dies....... AAUUGGG.........

Get as many newbies as possible, into units ASAP, and they will learn how to play coordinated as a Team in a Team Based game first thing, and not scatter and die so fast, then they will have more fun and not rage quit after getting stomped over and over.......!!!!!!!!!!!!

the biggest point here, is to Never Let them become Baby Seals / Stray Cats to began with........

Well since Steam launch is about to happen was just thinking it might be good for the community to set something up to help new players. Not sure what it should be but would be nice if he help keep as many players as possible. Any one have any good ideas?

Get our New Player stickied threads posted to Steam MWO Forums, assuming they will have one, as soon as possible.

The earlier they have access to important info, the better.

Take an active role in stamping out the BS our haters will spread out of malice.

Have PGI post a visible link in the client that reads "GOT A QUESTION? NEED HELP? VISIT THE NEWBIE FORUMS OF MWO!" and we'll take good care of them.

Spike Brave has a ton of them and they are still useful I think. Best way to play would probably go to Sidestrafe's videos.

You going to be on your A game when the remodel hits and the meta changes dramatically? What makes you confident about it?

That's not going to change things so much that veterans will no longer have numerous advantages over new players.

Not saying every single new player will get horribly stomped into the ground by everybody else, but are balance changes going to give new players even ground? Not a damn chance.
