Mediums: Wolverine (certain variants), Hunchie, Griffin
Heavies: Thunderbolt, Grasshopper, Jagermech
Assaults: Stalker, King Crab, Banshee
Clan
Lights: Arctic Cheetah, There are no seconds or thirds
Mediums: Stormcrow, Nova, There is no third
Heavies: Timber Wolf, Hellbringer, Cauldron Born
Assaults: Dire Wolf, Executioner, Warhawk

Lights: FS9 , wolfhound and perhaps raven
meds: Wolverine , Blackjack and crab
heavies: Thunderbolt , grasshopper , dragon/blackknight
assaults: Stalker, banshee, King crab/battlemaster
As for the clans, well they only have 4 mechs per class (5 heavies).. but in order of effectiveness:
lights: ACH, KFX, ADR (i love my MLX more than all of them though)
meds: SCR , NVA , IFR
heavies: TBR , HBR , EBJ
Assaults: WHK , DWF , EXE

I think WHK is a bit more effective than DWF, because it can easily be where it should be, and when it should be... with enough firepower.
Effectiveness of the dires depends on their position. and if the position is not good, them along with anyone who tries to protect them are gonna be destroyed!

Firestarter-FS9-S
Raven-3L or 4X (depending on quirk value vs ECM)
Mediums
Hunchback (all of them are solid, except the 4SP, but that might change)
BlackJack-1X
Wolverine-6K (maybe 6R due to quirks, too close to call it)
Honorable mention
Crab-27B (proving to be an excellent medium)
Heavies
Jagmech all of them are pretty great
ThunderBolts (only recently due to overquirked insanity)
Cataphract (good all around heavy)
Honorable mentions
Quickdraw-5k & Blackknight (laser vomit)
Assaults
Banshee-3M & 3E (both are solid)
Stalker-4H & 4N (obviously laser vomit on great geometry
Mauler (proving to be the IS Dakka Master)
Clans
Lights
Arctic Cheetah (Clan equivalent of Firestarter, from hell)
Adder (depends on the build, but can be quite powerful for a light mech, only downfall is GIANT CT hitbox)
There is no third decent light, Kitfox is too slow and fragile, MistLynx is too slow and fragile as well with bad hardpoints.
Mediums
Stormcrow (multirole, pretty good hitboxes, fast)
Nova (depends on build, but ERPPC or 12 SPL are quite deadly)
Shadowcat (ECM, not very powerful, but agile enough to stay out of trouble)
Heavies
EbonJag (crazy amount of firepower for its weight, large CT, Pocket-Timberwolf with good hardpoints)
Timberwolf (there is a reason they call it the Timber-GOD, it does everything)
HellBringer (ECM, Great hardpoints)
Assaults
Direwolf (Monstrous amounts of firepower, but slow and easy to flank and tear apart, especially in Nascarlandia)
WarHawk (Surprisingly this is my favorite Clan assault, versatile and capable, Torso's are a little soft though)
Executioner (Gargoyle's big brother but tankier, MASC capable, pretty decent Assault, high chest hardpoints make up for its shortcomings)

Heavy - TDR-5SS, QKD-5K, TDR-9SE
Assault - BNC-3E, KGC-0000/000B (essentially, both variants pretty much offer the same builds), STK-4N
Clan
Light - ACH, KFX, ADR
Med - SCR, NVA, SHC
Heavy - TBR, EBJ, HBR
Assault - DWF, EXE, WHK

Assaults - Stalker
I don't play clan, but the best in each is fairly obvious
Light - Arctic Cheetah
Medium - Storm Crow
Heavy - Timberwolves
Assault - DireWolves
