I searched for a bug report on this, but didn't find any, apologies if it's a duplicate.
While in Gauntlet mode, do 2 (or 3, I didn't test past that) laps. Once you finish the second (or third) lap, don't press continue. The nearby mechs will shoot at you while you are viewing the screen showing your performance in that lap. If you take too long to press continue, you will be killed.
It doesn't seem to happen on lap 1, maybe no mechs were close enough when i tried it.
The game also seems to continue while the results are being viewed on other modes, but it is less of a problem.

I'll check it out. They should all get the signal to stop firing - but, as you surmise, it's likely none are close enough in the first rounds.
Found it, disabled 'Mechs didn't pay attention, so continued their attacks when they powered up.
