These seem true:

1. PGI has optimized server loads at 12 v 12 mech drops.
2. PGI can create maps with doors that open.

So why not have a game mode where randomization of how the fight happens?

1v1 x 12
2v2 x 6
4v4 x 3
8v8 + 4v4

My dream since the dawn of MWO has been to have small scale combat that effects or trickles into larger scale outcomes.

If I fight out a match 4v4 and my side has 2 mechs remaining in that area and the other team has an area with 2 mechs remaining and an area with 3 mechs remaining... both gates could open to finish thing up 2v5 or the team with 2 mechs remaining could elect which door to open first and fight out 2v2 or 2v3 or there could be a vote to open one gate and have the other gate automatically open after a certain passage of time.

In a 1v1 by 12 setup... you could let the first round sort out a winners and losers bracket, drop everyone in fresh mechs for round 2 and start eliminating people from the game. You could drop fresh mechs for each duel or just have people lumber on in whatever is left of their first mech.

Why?

Small units and smaller groups of friends have more fun dropping together when they won't get steamrolled by an organized 12 man. This doesn't begrudge folks who play with full 12 mans... but it levels the playing field and creates tactically interesting setups.

I like the idea of small scale matches using gates as "knockout" round blockers..

We could have a classic tournament progression of 24 x 1 vs 1 until only 1 champion remains, but that last match would be a cripple fight..

As a Clan Wolf warrior, let me tell you.. rarely has a cadet survived two mechs in his Trial of Position / Trial of Entrance..

We would probably have to have some sort of equalizer so that no single pilot fights more than 2 matches in the same mech.. or the ability to drop in a new mech for every 1 on 1 match..

It would be truly exceptional in this game to have someone complete a trial of position/entrance by destroying all three mechs. As a Wolf's Dragoon's unit, we hold those trials as well. It's one of my favorite parts of the game.
