Lets get the obligatory "Battletech fetishist admission" over with:
Hi, my name is Carby and I have a battletech obsession problem. I played it in the 80's, memorised tables etc etc blah blah blah.

Onto the points....
The other Free2Play in question is Warframe. Mainly based on 4 person coop instanced missions.

I tried Warframe after one of my friends introduced me to it.
(Haven't we all tried to introduce at least some of our friends to MWO?)

1. I got more lore in 4 hours then anything MWO provided ever. Sure the Intellectual Property is not as well developed as BT but they let you have it!

2. Levels. Feel huge, more variety, otherwise they kinda have a theme to how they work. Similar to MWO in that regard. They are much larger than MWO. Maybe the way instances are hosted allows them to do this?

3. Mission types. So many! But it does mostly boil down to "kill stuff". (Seem familiar?) But Warframe actually requires you to stick to the mission parameters still. "Kill stuff from over here" for example.

4. Difficulty. Early levels make you feel like a ninja legend. Later levels are harder. You can choose what levels you do. Had a crap sleep, tired but want to play, sure, take it easy, do some easy missions, still get some rewards. What does the MWO Tier 1 elite do to "chill" in game? Sometimes I want "a challenge" but sometimes I just want to escape life for a bit.

5. Events. Varying. Hourly mission "events". Every hour one or two missions have special parameters on it with a special reward too. I think there is a persistent universe like MWOs CW but I have yet to level up that far. I know it is integrated with the "missions" you pick though.

6. Suit and weapons. Different lore and completely different methodology but suit and weapons can be changed and upgraded. Maybe PGI could see how things could be done differently?

7. Money. Similar in-game "fake" and "real money" currencies. Similar "packages" on sale for real money. PGI not too far off on this one but I think Warframe still does it with more polish.

8. Homebase. In Warframe, between missions you have your own spacecraft/aka personal space to move your avatar around with various objects to interact with to do tasks like upgrading suits, picking a mission etc. Also can hit esc and do this from a menu without walking avatar about.

9. Community. A lot less hostile! They aren't competing directly with each other after all. Never saw L2P once!

All in all, if MWO had've been implemented similar to this I would be living the dream.

Anyway, outta here for now, on a break while I play Warframe, catch you when my Warhammer comes out and my Battletech obsessions grabs me again.

Warframe used to suck unbelievably back in the beginning.
It took a lot of time for them to get where they are.

Yeah, not an issue for me.
I am not sure if I communicated it well but after playing MWO for so long, to try another Free2Play and see it done so well I almost cried when I fired up MWO again....

Why should PGI be concerned about warframe? they aren't even remotely related.

Tried Warframe once, one of the most boring games i have ever played.

Then again i find all co-op games to be pointless and boring.

Several frames are a bit more complicated. Chorma technically has four skills, but some of them change in functionality depending on your energy color, and Equinox has seven skills. And besides those two, many frames have been getting decent reworks with the focus of skill synergy and utility, which has helped make their gameplay much more interesting.

Thanks for the info!

I tried Warframe a long time ago and it didn't help that those 4 skills each frame has are similar in function compared to each other (the last one is always a massive AoE or some sort). Nice to know that it's changing now.

I guess comparing core gameplay and whether it appeals to you personally can't be helped but it wasn't my main point.

4 player coop vs Environment is far different to stompy robots in deathmatch. They are not "competitors" in the stompy robot sense. They are competitors for $ and for those Steamers in the coming weeks who know nothing about either game or gaming universe that counts for something. Game preference counts for a whole lot more obviously.

I wasn't trying to advertise the game and say you should go there instead.
I tried to outline some of the things it does - outside the core gameplay - that made it so good. To bring awareness that such possibilities exist, could exist and lamented it was not even close with MWO....

Bwahahaha. You seriously just took one of, if not THE best, most fair F2P title, with an absolutely dedicated, smart (and also a lot larger) dev team, and then compared it to MWO.

Still laughing.

Hello friends i've been forum sleuthing to see the current state of MWO now since I haven't been playing.

I'm sorry but AW's "proper role warfare" is a sham that quickly falls apart as you go up in tiers. It essentially becomes MBT Warfare due to their design direction. MBTs scale in every single way (armor, gun, speed, traverse, vision), other classes don't. AFVs/lights/TDs don't become faster to deal with the much faster MBTs. It becomes impossible to get behind a MBT as they can traverse too quickly. When I say MBTs scale armor wise I don't just mean they keep the same armor schemes with bigger numbers, I mean they become nearly impenetrable frontally, quickly become immune to autocannons from the side, and will bounce quite a few shots to their sides from non MBTs. There are even a lot of MBT drivers complaining because they're so frontally immune at higher tiers. All the while their speed, vision, and side armor goes up increasingly make other classes irrelevant.

It's an issue the AW dev team is working on, but they have not listed any comprehensive plan on how to increase relevance of other classes. You can't just increase an AFVs maneuverability and speed as at a certain point the terrain itself is a limiter, going off tiny bumps taking large damage etc. You can't increase vision as classes can hit the vision limit quickly and after that it becomes camo reduction only, as well as the maps being too small for larger vision radiuses.

Peace oot now that dreams of AW are shattered.

Warframe is awesome, if you are into coop TPS shooter with strong RPG elements steeped in unique but weird sci-fi settings.

Thanks, OP. Gonna check it out. I prefer PVP, but I did enjoy the Mass Effect coop stuff. I usually get more adrenaline from actually fighting real people, but damnit, when all 3 teammates are down and waiting to be revived and you hear the screams of two Banshees heading your way, the old ticker does start to beat a little bit faster.

Btw, I want to say two things about Armored Warfare:
Yes, it does have role warfare. A rather elegant and fun solution to having light vehicles, artillery, tank hunters and battle tanks on the same battlefield. MWO would have been a better game with role warfare.

Yes, it is boring and unrealistic. Basically, the game engine doesn't render enemy vehicles if you fail the scouting dice roll. Quite often, you'll be killed by vehicles that are literally invisible. On top of that, there's virtually no customization, the grind to get high tech vehicles is absolutely insane (makes the Paulconomy look like a socialist welfare utopia) and the core gameplay is fairly shallow.

Well I played warframe it was fun and refreshing at the beginning, but it repeats itself too soon and therefore feels to much like a grind. Same AI behavior is same AI behavior.

So even if in MWO we play the same maps over and over again, due to PvP it never really is the same.

I tried Warframe after enjoying the Mass Effect 3 Coop.
Was very unimpressed.
The powers are used too sparingly for the pace to pick up, and the frames don't feel different enough for me.
You just run and gun (or melee), and in the later levels, you just use cover a bit more.
Other than that, you just farm stuff forever. Enemies are always the same, nothing really ever surprises you or puts you on your toes.
In Mass Effect 3 Coop, you had these one shot kill enemies that you actually had to be scared of. Killing your first solo (without consumables) Banshee was actually a challenge.
Nothing like that in Warframe, where i could easily farm bosses solo without breaking a sweat.
I grew bored in a month or so, never picked it up again.

Funny enough, that's more or less in line with the development of real life. Tanks benefit from an economy of scale that smaller vehicles can't support.

Playing in the 80s doesn't mean battletech obsession, playing it in the 80s means being one of hundreds of franchise dropouts that happen to be old.
Proper obsession requires you still play actively, and make new players where existing ones can't be found.
I recently ran the quickstart rules for a bunch of Japanese 5th graders during lunch recess.
I don't care about what you did 30 years ago, I care about what you're doing NOW. If you've not picked up the dice or bought product once since the Clinton administration, you're retired.

Just sayin'
