Because a Fusion Engine is not an Internal Combustion Engine. Fusion Engine is a core, where Hydrogen>Helium fusion is maintained, which is surrounded by a shell of shielding and supported by Heatsinks. If you destroy a part of that shielding, the engine will only be capable to maintain it's function by reducing the output. The difference is that IS XL engines are less volume-efficient, and destruction of the side-torso component leads to enough damage to knock it straight out of comission, and Clan XLs are not.
Hi Divine, the ideas are science fiction, not real science. XL was made up to introduce balance in the TT game. For example, why is an lighter engine BIGGER than a much heavier and compact engine? Only in a make believe GAME will you have such a situation, and it was done to add some negatives to XLs vs STDs. Engineers will make something lighter and MORE COMPACT as technology improves. So given that this is a fictional game and not something we need to explain with physics. If the game was all about real physics we wouldn't be running through water and snow at the same speed as we run on land.... etc etc
And even if we use your description of the situation, it would still make more sense that the IS mech would still have some power, i.e. NOT DIE immediately if only 1 side torso is destroyed.

I agree, none of us know what "balance" is and I blame PGI for bringing the concept to the game in different and sometimes mysterious ways: Gauss recharge time, ERlaser nerfs,Super Quirks for 1 variant of a chassis and on and on
I like variety and I like that different mechs perform differently, and if we EVER get real role play/tactics in the game then our "lesser" mechs might be better in the future.
BUT FOR NOW... the biggest glaring 800 lb Gorilla, Pink Elephant, or whatever you want to call is it the superior tanking ability, speed, and weapon load of all Clan Mechs due to their XL engine weight and damage behavior. All the weapon tweaking in the world won't change that.
So for the sake of FUN -- not balance, not lore -- I'm asking that we try to give IS XL similar (not the same) damage behavior as the Clan and see what happens.
In fact, I would even want to try it without weapon quirks and nerfs so that the Clan Mechs have weapon advantages like range, damage, etc. so that the players use tactics more in line with the lore. That would be a major improvement to me.
