Okay lets say we have two mechs. They are identical except that one mech has 1 point more of head armor.

By your definition there would be a meta because technically one mech is better.

Realistically speaking, there would be no real difference in game play because 1 point of head armor is not going to make or break a match and it will almost never make a difference because the number of headshot kills alone is astronomically low, especially if you filter out headshots on AFKs. The impact on game balance would be minimal and most people wouldn't care.

Note that MWO never used the term "meta" until PGI removed the ballistic firing delay in closed beta and introduced DHS/XLs that allowed people to boat PPCs and ballistics. Oh sure there were more effective options, but the gap wasnt as huge before then and there were a lot more varied builds.

If I really wanted to go as picky as this example I would ask how much head armor does it have? Above, lower or equal to 15?
Otherwise this example is pretty irrelevant as you pointed out.

The point is that in a scenario like that almost nobody would care about it so there wouldnt be a huge issue over how it is meta to pick one over the other (unlike now).

I think there will be a shift in Mechs, especially on IS side based on w hich have the highest quirks and can bout weapons.

On Clan side probably not much will change after the nerf patch since PGI left Clans with not many good Mechs. There are still many Clan Mechs that are weak or unviable.

Except I never saw the limited mech selection the op mentioned... Before the patch I saw everything including quiet a few CTF's and even Catapults, even a K2 and occasional Orions. God help those blokes souls... :P

If a mech falls out of meta, in the woods, on top of a power gamer, and crushes him into a greasy paste, does anyone care?

There will be no changes on Clan side because most Clan Mechs are terribly underperforming. We are sticking with what works mostly because alternatives are very bad. Namely: Kit Fox, Adder, Myst Lynx, Nova, Ice Ferret, Summoner, Gargoyle, Executioner, Warhawk. With this many Mechs being trash of very close to it you can't do miracles.
EDIT: Constant laser nerfs are hurting these Mechs more than other because laser vomit builds were what kept these things above water somehow.

On IS side, as predicted, many chassis previously ignored are returning and in great numbers. Always nice to see more Blackjacks, Catapults and Atlases.I would love to see more Commandos, Locusts, Shadowhawks and Trebuchets though. Each an interesting Mech in its own way.

Defend more, you will mostly run into teams of HHOD,ARMD,228,TCAF,NTEX,etc....they run drop decks almost exclusively of tbolts, battlemasters and stalkers with the same weapons.

I don't think it will happen.

Sligthly, perhaps, but most people will just stay or shift more to laser only builds because of the enormous gauss rifle cooldown.

Perhaps a UAC + laser build. Not sure, but it's logic they would look further then the gauss rifle now.

Mauler-2P has a nice 2 UAC5 build with 2 LPLs and 4 MLs. It was good before the gauss nerf.

The meta is not a set of 5 mechs, the meta is a set of emchs doing it significantly better than the others. If one drops out the palce is not necessarily filled. It cna mean it's just a mech less. the place will only be filled when a mech reveals to be significantly better than the average mechs and competitive enough to the current meta mechs.

Pre patch : Pretty much the only mechs you see in CW are tbolts, battlemasters, stalkers and the occasional light mech to round out the drop deck.

Lots of people claimed that the new quirk re-balancing meant that "over-quirked mechs are now balanced" which should thereotically lead to equal usage among most mechs.

A week from now, are we going to see the same mechs and builds pre-patch or will we start seeing more mechs and more varied builds?

I think no. The selection will go back to pre quirkening, and it was not that big at all. Wait 2 or 3 weeks and then see when people tested various mechs again which remains the main choices.

And in a dusty old IS hangar is LCT trapped in a SDR net. because thats the only game they are left play.
The unbalance between chassis is on both factions, and its big.

I bought a LOT mechs, and the marauder announcement made me qutie interested into finding another long term relation mech on IS side again, So I was so | | close to preorder the a marauder pack. Because it has chicken legs and real arms as the Catapharact has. But then a sudden rebalance PT 3 striked the Forum. and my no its so far | | far away. I Just don't want to play a game where the majority of the mechs I own are BAD choices to bring to the battlefield. Of course the marauder would not be one of the bad choices, that was for sure. But the general direction those changes go, are very clear and they follow a path where I just can't support to keep it going. These changes widen more and more gaps between the chassis. Rebalance 4 just confirmed my guess and I wonder how many more of these thinsg will come.

I don't regret the money I spent in this game, because at this time I had laods of fun with them. And PGI made quite a lot improvements since IGP is out of the game. But the balance it's something they seem to not be able to manage. And I just don't need more mechs I can't play by time that ontop just increase the chance to screw the game for my teammates.
