So far, I have enjoyed a STD MAD builds over XL builds, not sure why though, probably because I love the two LB10 and triple AC5 builds.

I concur 100%!!!!

My favorite build thus far is a gauss, 2PPC, and 2MPL -3R model, I shoved an XL300 in it. I've only taken it on 5 drops so far but it sure seems to soak up damage like the Arctic Cheeter. Im amazed, really.

XL is the best way to go with it if you want to actually get anywhere. Still i don't see it as a good mech, imo it's a tier 3 mech at best compared other heavy offerings.
