So in all the older mechwarrior games, I won most fights (and icnreased my tech haul) by simply shooting off the legs of my enemies. Legs had relatively little armor, and were fairly easy to hit, making even the mightiest assault mech fairly easy pickings.
Is it the same in this game? If not, how have they avoided this pitfall??

I'd hope it IS the same honestly. It's not really a pitfall considering how much harder it is to take out the legs than to just blast through the core. Yes you could become proficient at it, but if you played MW4 Online or even MW:LL, leg kills against players is actually a bit more difficult than against AI.
I dunno, it's not as easy as "Just leg everything" because, as shown in the games above, you blow too much ammo, lose too much armour and usually players are FAR more aggressive and simply won't LET you leg them. Is it easier than blasting down to the core? Yes. Is it easier than just going for rear armour? Never in a million years. If you get into a position you can get an easy leg kill, well done, you earned it, if you're having to WORK for the leg kill, well... it's probably easier to get behind him and go for his rear plates instead. Also, go look up the Awesome, for example... most front line brawler type 'Mechs actually have MORE armour on their legs than on their torso.
Just because you CAN leg a mech, does not mean it's the best way to beat it. 'Specially not assaults, like the Atlas.

Thanks for the links.... I did not know of the term Legging, and searching for Leg was too short for the forumn search engine. Very happy to see its not quite as easy as it was in MW4.

What about that mech, two machine guns on it's legs means that you HAVE to shoot it there.

Legging is pathetic and requires ZERO skill. It is NOT hard to hit a mech's leg, its ******* easy (pardon my french).
Granted, I only played MW4 Veng and Mercs, because the others were before my time, and legging in those games would get you banned from servers and kicked from teams. It's absolutely pathetic, the only 2 times I can agree with legging is shooting a light mechs leg off so he slows down, and the other is if I get legged first.
When the honor system is in place (and it will be there), legging will earn you a reputation which most likely will hurt you in the long run.
This is my opinion on the subject.
